Enormous Stump disposal? Most cost effective method?

Get some pieces of sheet steel like used for roofing. Stack them up around the stump and on top of it. Turn it into it's own oven. Get a source of air. I've used a service vacuum cleaner set up to blow. Use some galvanized pipe to aim your air. Light the stump up with some Kerosene or Charcoal lighter fluid, put the air blowing on it to keep it going and you'll be able to burn it up completely. I've used this method before and it works. A normal sized stump say 3 feet across will burn overnight.

This is one of the most classic discussions I've seen in a long time. So many widely varied ideas - sacrificial chainsaws, army trucks, pressure washers, bigger machine, explosives, fires - great stuff! Am I the only one who was thinking airlifting it out with a helicopter?!

Seriously though, I've dug out some massive stumps with a comparatively tiny machine. I cleared and stumped a 100 x 40 garden that was oak and pine up to 18 inch diameter - decent size stuff. I did it all with a Kubota B2630. All it takes is time and persistance. Small machines make you work smarter, not harder. Here are my tricks - many have already been mentioned.

1. Get as much dirt out of it as possible - however you can. Power washer, crow bar, shovel - whatever.

2. Pop as many roots as you can all around the stump. If you can't pop them, work out farther away from the stump where the roots are a little smaller. Also, there are usually roots deeper than you think.

3. This is the biggest trick. Don't use brute force to try and pop it out. It will come out a whole lot easier if you try to twist it, or rotate it in place. 90% of my stumps came out like this. They twist to a point then just pop and you can roll them out of the hole.

Good luck, whatever you choose. I still like the helicopter idea though. Or maybe you could donate it to the air national guard and they could have some practice strikes on it!!

That is one of the best ideas I have herd so far, but i might soak it with oil and blast a tiger torch in to get it burning.:2cents:

If you read his post he says he can't really burn it because it is next to another tree.. He would have to get it out in the back 40 first.

BTDT, though with a root ball that was maybe 12 ft across. Wash and cut, as others said. The roots at the outside are pretty small and as with a lot of things as you start to cut into it, the task becomes more manageable and you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Granted, it will take a bit longer with a 30' root ball than a 12 footer, but you'll git-er-done. Like the others, I'd like to see a picture of this 30-foot diameter. At the extremes, you've got to be talking about pinky-sized roots. Chains are cheap before you start renting equipment. $20+ depending upon size/brand. And there's no guarantee you'll "ruin" a chain. Yeah, I used an old chain, had to sharpen it a few times, took me a few days of chipping at it, but the stump is gone.

I was thinking if the stump was inside kind of a sheet metal oven he could burn it near the trees. Really I think that is the best idea on here.:2cents:

Boy, a lot of suggestions. My vote goes for the big truck and chain!

However...We need pics of the real stump so we know what we are working with.

I have an (electric) pressure washer but its prolly way under powered, not to mention I can only reach the perimeter soil. the stump is sitting upright with the majority of the dirt underneath, out of reach for even the best of power washers.

Drill a hole in the top big enough to insert the end of a digging bar or pipe into to use as a lever. Hook the lever to your truck and you can probably tip the stump over to be able to wash the dirt off the root ball.

Well the OP hasn't chimed in for awhile, so we may have scared him off with all of our ideas/solutions.......

Well the majority say wash and chainsaw. But if you are to scared to use your saw, talk to an area farmer. Most of them would have a tractor that would easily be able to move that, and they may do it for a fairly cheap price.
