Front tractor tire (25 x 8.5-15) has slow leak at rim/bead in a localized area about 2" long. No obvious damage to edge of rim. Tire has been flat before and pluged. May have damaged bead on first flat. Previous plug repair holding fine. Would this be a good application for "Slime" sealant? Not really wanting to use a tube. Need suggestions or info. Thanks

I would definitely give the Slime treatment a try. For the $10. it costs for 16 oz. it's worth the gamble.

Unless it does not work, then you have a mess. Tube and be done with it.

I dont slime my tube. I would think it would be a mess. Its so easy ,specially fronts to patch a tube I just did one yesterday it took all of 15 minutes to do.

Sounds to me that you have some dirt between the tire and rim.
I would break the bead and clean it then put on some tire lube and re inflate.
I was told that when you add the stop leak crap in a tire you can not patch-plug it anymore as the patch part will not stick and just plugging it allows water into the cords, destroying the tire.

You can't slime a tube .. :( I've tried and then read the tube of slime and it said it doesn't work on tubes,,

That happened to me, except it was weeds instead of dirt jammed between the tire and rim. Had no idea, just took it to truck tire repair place and that's all it was.

I believe slime won't work in your situation because of where your leak is at. Slime works best on tire and sidewall surfaces. Slime does cleanup with soap and water if you need to take your tire off and do a surface patch as Slime doesn't harden. Slime comes in two variants for tube and for tubeless. I wouldn't hesitate to use it on any tire. As far as making a mess....yes it can....but so can many of the liquids we use for ballast in our tires.

Good luck.

I have had real good luck letting out the air, then pouring in Linseed oil, then airing up. Be sure to spin the tire to evenly coat everything. The ratio I use was about 1/5 can to wheelbarrow size tire. A tractor tire might need 1/2 to a whole can.

The rims on my old MF1010 are beat up from the years of abuse it has taken from PO's, and none are available anywhere near here. I used to have the same problem, slow leak around flat spots on rim. Last time it went flat, it popped the bead off the rim. I put a nylon strap around the tire, and gobbed silicone around the largest opening to get it to hold enough air to reseat the bead. I then ran a bead of silicone sealant around the bead of the tire and seated it and pumped it full of air.....hasn't leaked in months now. Might not be right for everyone, but worked for me. Beats the crap outa crawling in the mud to pull the tire off and drive 10 miles to the tire shop, get it back on the rim.

Fix A Flat will also work. Its not as messy as Slime and will clean up with water should you have to dis-mount the tire later.

Thanks for all the input. Didn't think about de-flating and reseating the bead. Just may be some debris between rim and bead of tire. Reason I didn't want to go tube, was to still be able to use plungs which for me is eaiser since when I am using the tractor I am always on the road somewhere. Would fix-a-flat still allow me to use plugs in the future?

I am also betting it is dirt or a sliver of wood or something jammed in the bead. I have had several slow leaks that turned out to be just that.

I'd slimed my fronts. Worked for a year or so. Then they started slowly losing air.

Put tubes in both of them. They stay happily inflated all the time now.

Tire fixed. Problem was debris between bead and rim as suggested. Suspect it got there during last flat that I pluged since the bead was broke. Thanks for the help. This forum is better than the educational channel.

Everybody should be aware that if they put Slime or Fix-a-flat in a tire, you will likely be charged an additional hazmat fee when you take it to get it fixed right, or replaced. The stuff should be avoided.

I have fix a flat in both my front tires. I had picked up a nail and didn't have the plug gun with me at the time. When I got back home I removed the nail and plugged it.

I don't know about Slime but you shouldn't be charged a hazmat fee for Fix a Flat since it is water soluble and non hazardous.
