Agreed.
And I think my area is probably a little more challenging than many other places when it comes to this subject.
It's becoming too suburban around here. We (Dad and I) quit going to auctions in search of "good" stuff around here years ago because they attract a large crowd of "new suburbanites" who just moved out here from the DC / Baltimore area with very little experinece with any type of equipement - and they pay nearly full price, we too saw cases of people paying more than new...
...said the same thing about his local auction place (south central PA).

Yeah, those newbies get the auction fever and screw it up for a lot of bidders...
You see the same thing on eBay sometimes.

I cringe when I see posts of owners buying new attachments with their tractor when buying so they can take advantage of low interests rates with their financing. I'm not talking about an FEL, I'm talking about box blades, etc.
I figure, if it weren't for those guys, I'd never be able to find used ones. :)

I shop CL & the local equipment/farm auctions for implements. My FEL,54"MMM & BH came new as a package deal for my BX22 $9200 in '02 IIRC. Woods 60" BB was CL $125, 51" Kubota SB with QH was CL $450 (converted to 3PH), 32" Befco tiller was CL $300. All were good shape, just minor repairs, lube, shear pin, etc. The SB was part of a rig that was sold off except the Quick Hitch & SB. It had been used & needed some work. Conversion to 3ph, new cutter bar, Shoes, The chute was frozen solid. Worth the work, but not by much. The Tiller was in good shape except for the shear pin. The original owner had snapped it creating his front yard & didn't know how to fix it. He figured he'd totaled it & put it up. A shear pin, oil change, lube good as new. BB are hard to kill, not too much to break.
T-Man.

Auctions can be a good source, but personally, I don't like them! :( Seems like anything I want is the last thing to sell & goes for twice what I'm willing to pay!

I've gotten along pretty good watching CL and a local radio station's "trading post". ~~ grnspot

Time is Money. If you can "afford" to spend 4 hours saving $400, then auctions can be a fun way to spend a Saturday AM. But you have to know the market, be able to load and transport whatever you buy, and most of all, know how to Work an Auction. (jump in at the last minute to crush an early bidder, bid fast and often to scare off a buyer, etc. A degree in psychology would be useful here:D)

And the kind of auction makes a difference. Is it absolute? is it just farm equipment, or household goods as well? Mostly big, new tractors and 100 hp implements? If so, there may be some older, smaller (our size:laughing:) attachments that go really cheap, because the dealers aren't interested.

It think it was at an auction of Julius Caesar's estate that the phrase "Caveat Emptor" was first used:laughing:

Actually, the best deals come at auctions. Here are a few things I've picked up:
10' tandem cultipacker- $200
6' 3pt Deerborn disk- $125
8' lime spreader- $150
New Idea dual chamber fertilizer spreader- $45 (needed a little work)
Paul portable cattle scale- $100 (new price $7300)
As with anything, a person needs to know what something is worth, but I've saved thousands at auctions.

Auctions used to be a great place to pick up deals around here. Unfortunately, now with the 10-15% buyers premiums auctioneers charge plus 13% sales tax, deals at auctions are almost nonexistent any more. A few years ago there were several farm auctions every week, now there are very few if any farm auctions in a month worth of weekends.

Deals all seem to come via Kijiji and Craigslist.

That's where I've had my best luck at auctions. I'll go to these farm auctions where the $100K+ stuff is selling and pick off the little stuff. I can often get a whole pallet of implements, hydraulics, tools, etc. for pennies on the dollar. I haven't been for a while since time is short lately, but I hope to get back in the habit again soon.

I go to auctions for the fun of it. I love the crowd and the atmosphere. My kids always beg to come. They bring their hard earned allowance money and blow it all on burgers and candy bars from the overpriced concessions trailer.
