vehicle inspection rant

Never ceases to amaze me when it comes to automobile issues. The inspector that gave that diagnosis, probably can't even change his own oil:mad:
I suppose this type (stress maker) happens every day, unqualified employes trying to impress someone or establish a reputation.
I live in Alabama an fortunatly don't have to deal with inspections---YET:thumbsup:
Although unrelated to OP--I am reminded almost every day of a statement my automotive technical instructor made 40 years ago.
"There is something macho about being a mechanic. You can walk into a room with ten men, and ask a question about your automobile and you will get eight answers""Seven will be based on what the person has read or what he was told".

I used to live in Nashville and they had emissions testing. Fortunately, I knew a garage there that was honest. Now my aunt got ripped off all the time...and I think my sister in law pays for a lot of unnecessary repairs, too.

Moved to a rural area where the nearest local mechanic went out of business because he was, IMO, incompetent. The next mechanic that was a bit further away was okay, but wasn't getting enough business to earn a decent living. So now I have to either fix it myself or work at finding a decent mechanic.

emissions testing

IMO another joke, watch a 70's vehicle with straight pipes pass "emissions test" while a car from the late 90's couldn't, go figure :confused2: Garage owner did the test just to see what would happen.

Recently --in the last 4 years or so-- NH went to computerized registrations and inspections. (Inspections must be done yearly, in the birth month of the registered owner).

Now, I believe in safety inspections- there are enough junkers out there on the road already-- and it's nice to know that NH does check things that matter, like lights, tires and brakes. Even if it's only once a year....

Used to be, it was around $20, pass or fail.. Now, thanks to the ease and paper-saving computerized version, it's $45+ for the same work.......

And Lord help you if there's one digit wrong on your VIN!

I have retrofitted fuel injection in 86 CJ7; we don't have emissions here in our county, but if we did, they would go by 86 standards for me.

I allmost did that with an old jeep I had, got rid of it before I had the chance:(. My truck is a 99 so I didn't/don't have to worry about emissions test :). then on the other hand my wife and kids vehicles do have to go through the emissions

On the birth month IMO would be a pain in the ___. I try to work it so my vehicles are all due in the spring, april may june, that way if I need to get any work done I can do it myself, even if I have to work in the drive.

Now, I believe in safety inspections- there are enough junkers out there on the road already-- and it's nice to know that NH does check things that matter, like lights, tires and brakes. Even if it's only once a year....

I agree vehicles should be safe, but I don't care for the hidden wasted money that has to come out of my pocket for BS work and other horse dung. Lets face it there will be junkers on the road no matter what. I new a few guys that would just take a warm wet wash cloth and peel valid stickers off of one car and put it on theirs{not hard to do}. Lights are a waste of time also, just because a light works in the morning doesn't mean it won't blow by night time. Vehicle inspections kind of remind of gun regulations/restrictions, the only ones effected are the ones that are allready following the rules, mean while the others are getting away with what ever.

BINGO, this sums it up money money money.........for pretty much nothing

I like VA's inspection for the same reason. Once a year we are required to have one to make sure my tires have tread, the brakes are sound, the lights work, horn, etc. Luckily because I am rural, we don't have to have the emissions check. At least that is a diagnostic so even when it was required where I used to live, it wasn't their call to pass/fail. Based on emissions from a tailpipe that was tied to a computer. The equipment was monitored and state police would check out stations that were failing an unusually large amount and would shut down any that were committing fraud by messing with the equipment.

From an accident perspective, how many accidents are due to "unsafe" vehicles that weren't inspected versus "unsafe" drivers? Put the money towards DUI enforcement and stop wasting everybody's time with vehicle inspections.
