I was 'dismounting' yesterday and my key got hung up on a jacket pocket:

The rest is buried (invisibly) in the tumbler, so i can just twist it with anything that will grab the key slot. Any of you smart fellers have a suggestion for avoiding a replay of this in the future? This isn't the first time the key has hung up on my clothing.

Bobcat makes "short" keys that will help. I was catching the ignition key and knew that I would eventually break it off. The short key has about half the body of the standard key and makes a significant difference. You still have to be careful but it should solve your problem.

Do you have total control over the machine, is it on your property/ farm.
If yes then you could install what every army jeep had a ignition switch on the dash. This is really what you have now, the honour system.
If you are on a job site well then what I have seen is a lockable steel cover over the ignition switch.
I have seen ads for a new car with a push button start switch and you could relocate the master switch out of harms way ie ( your jacket/ clothing).
I was not the biggest help.

Been there, done that, took a couple of picks and dug the buried part out and started using my spare key. Reminds me I need to buy a couple more keys, lol.

(honor system, when all of JD keys are the same doesn't matter)

Going commando, i like it...no short key jokes, please. :)

Fortunately it's on my property and sleeps in the garage. I lobbed a note over to the dealer asking about better keys, but knowing for certain will help (that or a dremel). I haven't tried digging it out yet, may give that a shot when it warms up a bit.

Thanks again folks!

A broken coping saw blade will usually extract the broken end from the switch. You could make a switch guard?? i.e. A bent U or L tab that mounts over the switch retaining nut like a washer with side(s) to shield the key. MikeD74T

last time i broke key off the best thing i found to dig it out was the key ring. it was thin spring steel I straightened out and made int a pick. Maybee some wd40 would help.

I also second the short key. It has helped me alot.

I did look at the switch for the lights I believe or the signal I can't remember. Anyway its on the left side and it sticks out. I think I am gonna hacksaw it flush just where I can operate it before I rip the whole thing off accidentally. That little plastic housing around the switch is prollly like $647.56 from the dealer!
