Wow, just got this virus out of this PC, took all day for me to find the solution, this is a "Ransom" virus. that pretends to be a Windows anti-virus program that wont let you load any programs sometimes not even look at your file structure, and nags continously that you are under virus-attack and would you like to activate your virus software? It hijacks your browser's and will only let you go to their website to pay the money to get this virus removed. You cannot fix your computer without another computer, and even then it is hard to do, you gotta work fast while it is booting, at least that is what I had to do. If you get this you will know it.. Hope you don't

Several AV companies have versions of their AV software that are bootable CD's to scan your hard drive. Basically customized Linux Live CD's. AVG and Avira are 2 I know of for sure.

Some "types" of websites are notorious for introducing this type of virus.... be careful

It's much worse than that, they don't just want a little money to get rid of their hijack program, they want all the money they can get from you.

I've been told and I believe these are full blown identity theft rings! Looking to get all the info they can on you, starting with your credit card info, which for them is a great place to start.

These AV things are the only type of viruses I've seen in the last 2 years. I seem to get one every couple months. Lately Norton has been able to remove them with a full system scan, it's a PITN cause it takes awhile, but works better than me trying to track it down to remove.

For those who use Windows, you can reduce the risks by using Firefox instead of Internet Explorer - and adding a few extra features like NoScript.

Also, even the free version of AVG antivirus includes Firefox add-ons that allow web pages to be scanned before being presented.

could you be more specific?

Two "types" that come to mind are **** and warez sites. Both very dangerous to casually browse.

How would one turn on the noscript feature in Firefox?
