They killed the Rottie? that's getting too bold. We have them up here, but they aren't that brave...yet

I'm wondering too how brave they will get. I was out early December walking the dog in the woods. What sounded like 3 or so coyotes went through the woods about 150 yds. away. They were over a slight rise and behind trees, so I couldn't get a look. The dog was very interested but quiet thank goodness and I began to wonder if I was going to have a problem depending on which way the coyotes went. I'm not sure the coyotes knew we were there. Anyways, they passed on and went off through the woods.

I have no idea how the coyotes might react to me plus the dog, but I think it could be different than just me alone. The presence of the dog might actually have drawn them to us even though the dog is big at 145 lbs. The few coyotes we have seen in daylight don't seem to have any interest in getting close, but they don't look very fearful either.

My dogs let me know when there are predators about. I have black bear and cougar as well as coyotes. Whenever I think it is necessary, I strap on a .357 when leaving the house. I have enough acreage that the dogs are not on leashes. So far no problems, though they did run off a cougar last summer.

Yeah Moss you are correct. One should proofread a post before, not after hitting the Submit Reply tab. I knew I would probably get busted on that one. I nominate you as sheriff of the acronym police department.

Sorry. couldn't resist. :confused3:

Feel free to poke me in the eye the next time you get the chance. :D

I totally sympathise with the ranchers.

I do not believe in extinction though. The wolves are in thier natural range. The ranchers exterminated them, to extinction, in thier natural range. So government or not, the wolves are back. Exterminate them again?

There needs to be some balance. Populations can not be out of control. Needs management like any other wild(deer, bear, elk ect) or introduced species(ie cows, sheep).

I love to hunt, fish ect. But, just do not agree with extinction.

I agree, the coyotes in many, many area's need management to get thier numbers under control.

Interesting, the California state flag has the California Grizzly bear on it. So does the state seal. The wide ranging California Grizzly though, was hunted to extinction. Gone. No more.

Robert, for the most part I share your views. I don't want to see the extinction of anything either. Seems when they introduce the wolf back into an area the rancher always seems to catch the brunt of the problems and the government is always too slow to respond.

Outside of work, I volunteer in a couple organizations. It is frustrating when one group can get critical functions taken care of in hours or minutes, but other groups take days, weeks, and even months.

the government is always too slow to respond.

I'd say the hogs are worse. They breed like rabbits and are destructive to wildlife habitat in general. I guess you could take out a few hogs and sit over the carcass' to get a few coyotes!

What is worse ? coyotes, or wild hogs. I have both.

The hogs. They really tear up the land. More than a few years back I was visiting Florida and I went out to some state land near Lake Okeechobee to take pictures. I was walking off road quite a bit. Huge tracks of land were had been plowed up by pigs. This place was full of Palmetto's which channelized where you could walk. The pigs would plow up the ground in the trails between the Palmettos. I walked into one area, the ground was plowed 6-10 inches deep. The little man on my shoulder said I needed to leave so I did. There was only 2-4 feet between me an the Palmettos which could easily hide a bunch of big pigs. All I had with me was cameras, lenses and one big heavy tripod. That tripod ain't much good against a big pig.:D

So I walked back the way I walked in. A few hours later it was waiting to see the sun set and I was on the road about 100 yards away from where I walked out of the woods. For some reason I looked behind me and saw this big black thing cross the road. At first I thought it was a black bear. It was big. It was possible it was a bear but not likely and it did not quite walk like a bear. It was a big pig. A very big pig. It was right in the area I had been walking. The little man on my shoulder was right.

A minute or so later a pick up drove down the road with dogs in the back. They were not supposed to be on this land but there they were. The truck was jacked up pretty high and the dogs were loose in the bed. The truck crossed where the pig went across the the road and those dogs jumped out and started chasing. The two guys drove off road a bit, they could only go so far before they hit water, and then they started running.:D:D:D

At our house we saw a coyote back in 2005 within 25-30 yards of the house one morning. He had no fear. But we only saw him once and I never heard any at the time. My dad tried to call the coyote in but he took my dog with him. Something started to move in on his call but then the dog chased it away.

Sometime last year I thought I heard howls off to our SSE but I could not be sure. This week I and the kids were outside. They were playing and I was in the barn. I heard something but could not tell what I heard other than it was back to the SSE but closer. It could have been a owl or a coyote.

Last night I was up late and just went to bed when I heard a coyote howl to or NNW very close by. Withing a 100-200 yards. And I heard them yelping. The neighbors dogs, which are at least 1,000 feet away started barking. Our so called guard dog was sleeping. :D

We need to see if we can call the coyotes in. The kids are still to young for the coyotes to be around and the kids are starting to explore the woods as they should but that gets them a bit farther from the house.

Later,
Dan

That was definitely one of the better ones I've heard in a while!

Had me  too.

We have the yotes in the County here too for the last 15 years or more. Not round my house though and no tribute to me but I think the farmers keep that under quiet control, before they get a good grip, and my dog would give one or two a fit so it ain't a fun place to hang out. Big Blackmoth Southern Cur some dummy cut the sac on but didnt' squelch his taste for game. The yotes seem to do better in the more densely populated areas and the very remote areas here. Was in Parrish, FL in November. Yotes were in close and yelping away for hours one night under the biggest bonfire I've ever seen. They'd have definitely fined and maybe even cuffed me up in MD for that size a blaze. Had a great time down there with a bunch of fun lovin Baptists, go figure. They humor us heathen brothers once in a while. Great state but I'm partial to the foothills and lean the bike towards the mountains any chance. None the less, I get why people choose the warm flat land. Hunting there being apparently better than good.

Bears? yeah I had one visit this year for the first time ever. Must have been lost. Yearling by the damage but never saw it.
