First thing. I have a gun by my bed, but this post has me taking second thoughts about going back to Florida on a vacation if the locals think they need the fire power described on this post.

who are you talking to?

i never said I didn't like or didn't own .45acp I have 2 .45 acp semi auto's.

what gun can I not find??? I know where each and every gun I own is at every moment.

stopping power. i guess you don't consider 12g as stopping power?

.44mag as stopping power?

.500SWM as stopping power?

.50AE as stopping power?

The fact I don't own a .357 revolver does not automatically indicate that I am not serious about self defense. besides. if 4 rounds of 357 don't put somebody down.. what's a 5th or 6th gonna do? beyond that. if they can choke down 5 shells of 000 buck i'm not much sure what options you are left with...

I have more than sufficient fire power to repell a small 'squad' of home invaders at my fingertips while I'm in my house. that doesn't even include my 2 concealed carry guns that while they are in aneminc .380.. that's another 13 rounds going down range into an intruder.

I can't see all that firepower setting there and have someone walk in thinking that if I magically had a 357 revolver there it would be SO MUCH DIFFERENT in an attack situation?

this thread has become crazy.... 357 is the only valid defense weapon? yeah right.. that's why all the police are now carrying them.. military too... forgot about that... :(

i'll stick to my scatter gun and assortment of other firearms i'm familiar with and a good shot with.. that and high quality self defense ammo...

as for 911.. yeah.. I'll call them after I'm safe to do so...

You forgot about cyborgs, Chris. What are you going to do if cyborgs invade your home?

Does anyone know if Virginia is self defense friendly? Too often we see stories of legal gun owners going to jail because they defended themselves and then get charged for their actions.

Yes, my limited experience with gunshot deaths would tend to confirm that.

And the news media reports I've seen so far of the tragedy in Tucson yesterday involved a 9mm.

I think a lot of those folks killed with small caliber weapons like .22s and .25s tend to die in the hospital hours later. That's just a guess on my part, from reading the local news over the last couple decades. Which leads me to make another guess, that a larger caliber would probably stop them faster and end it sooner. As for the 9mm... it seems 9mm has become the most common thug gun we read about. I think shot placement would be critical, just by the amount of people I read about going to the hospital and surviving 9mm shots. No science to back up any of my guesses, just a personal observation. ;)

Which brings up one more thought... thugs don't practice shooting at the range. Responsible gun owners who want to provide themselves and their families personal protection probably should. ;)

I'm not sure whether they die immediately, or later in the hospital, has anything to do with the caliber. I believe (don't have any scientific surveys or studies to prove it;)) that it just boils down to placement of the bullet. I remember one suicide in which the guy shot himself in the head with a .22 and I've no doubt death was pretty much instantaneous. And I was involved in one case in which a retired attorney in his 80s had become an invalid cared for by his wife, who was close to his age. They had no children and she became worried about what would happen to him if she should die first. So she went and bought a .22 semi-auto, had the gun dealer show her how to load and fire it. She laid out the clothes she wanted them buried in, left a note, and that night while he was asleep, she put 3 in his heart. I think death was pretty instantaneous. Then she sat down in an easy chair and put 4 in her own chest before dropping the gun in the floor beside the chair. A neighbor heard the shots and called the police. The first officer in the house said, as soon as he saw her, she said, "I sure made of mess of this, didn't I?" She was still conscious and lucid at the hospital, and she survived.

Incidentally, I think the Illinois State Police were one of the first departments I know of to go to 9mm semi-autos (I think it was about 1970) and a study I read indicated they shot numerous suspects during the first year, some shot multiple times, and not a single suspect died; all survived.

All should remember that a police officer's job is to subdue for possible prosecution, not be an executioner, and unfortunately their opposition has no such restriction yet may determine the ultimate outcome. MikeD74T

Yes, they should. When I started on the police department in 1964, there was no requirement to shoot any specific score. We went through the training, but no one was required to "qualify". The head of the police academy said, "If you can't shoot a score of 70 or better, you should go out to the range and practice on your own time. Your life may depend on it someday." We had to go shoot twice a year, but you could shoot any handgun, Colt or S&W, .38 caliber or larger, that you wanted to. The department provided the ammo for .38. For anything else, the officer had to provide his own ammo.

But then lawsuits changed things. Since individuals could sue the city, police chief, etc. for such things as failure to adequately train officers, the rules changed. Officers must shoot a qualifying score (currently 80) with the weapon(s) they carry, by make, model, and serial number.

That definitely stopped those carrying .44 magnums and pretty well all the .357s, too, since you cannot handle the recoil to fire, reload, and fire again fast enough for the police course.
