Got the forms in the mail to re-register my 14K Lb rated gooseneck trailer. Turns out the annual fee to keep my plates current went up to $181. Man! Thats an increase from $140 the previous years. For some reason when I payed that, it didn't seem to hurt, but this is ridiculous! Thats NYS for you, trying to recover moneys to run the state that they are running into the ground with overspending and bloated beaurocrats....Sorry, (getting a grip now). How much are you guys spending on your trailer regis?

In Michigan, they instituted a "permanent" tag. As long as you own the trailer, the tag is good. They cost about what you paid, but there's no renewal.

It was a bit of a gimmick when instituted. Annual tags were approximately half the permanent. The state gained a temporary shot of increased revenues.

Most states are broke. They are hiding behind Federals monies, (which merely borrows the money and goes deeper in debt) but if they were a private household or business, they'd have to declare themselves bankrupt. Stay tuned. The future will be interesting.

Here in VA the permanent tags are $90...not sure if it goes up or down based on your trailer...that was for my 24ft gooseneck...I think I paid about$60 or so for the 5X10 tag along a number of years ago...VA is a "right to work" state so we aren't in too bad a shape..we also have a good pro business Governor now in Bob McDonald...BobG in VA

I pay about $120 per year to register my 3 axle 18,000# trailer here in Indiana. Thats from memory so don't quote me on it. Both of my 2 axle 7,000# trailers are about $45 each.

I live in New York , and I bought a 22.5 K Goosneck this spring. I registered it in Main. All together it cost about $125, for a ten year registration, no inspection required. It was very easy, and about $20 of that was for a one time power of attorney form, that I can use to register other trailers with. You will hear people on this forum, with worries about doing this, but my opinion is that if the interstate trucks can do it, so can I.

i am also in NY, and registered my 14k equip trailer in maine. 5 years in maine cost less than 1 in NY. very easy to do, all done online, and had my plate in less than a week. again, no inspections either; i hate paying to get things inspected.

Tags for a 14K tandem axle cost me $140 annually in Texas. No inspections required.

You are finally paying for all those trips you take on MTA commuter rail and subways. As you live in Orange County, most, if not all the increase goes directly to the MTA. I'm in Dutchess, same deal. Haven't used MTA services in 35 years, but pay for them every day. 7000# bumper pull trailer $100.50 tfor 2011. I won't use it till April, so at least it will be pro-rated when I do register it then.

Permanent and long term plates for trailers are becoming more common. I think the DMV's look upon them as an annual nuisance. Places like Maine with lower fees attract a lot of outside revenue.

It is anything but a nuisance when they collect the kind of cash they do here.

Cost to keep my 8X24' enclosed car trailer in Virginia....

One time "permanent" plate $75.00

Annual "safety" inspection $16.00
Annual Personal Property Tax $85.00
Annual Insurance $140.00

Not inexpensive...

I'll swap real estate tax bills with you, or state income tax bills.

Believe it or not, I pay more in PPT than I do in RE tax. Too many plated vehicles in my driveway.

Virginia's income tax is relatively low at 5.75% as is our Sales tax. It's the vehicle taxes that sucks big-time down here.

If not for the Land Use program, I'd have a torch and a pitchfork down at the county offices.

I wouldn't mind paying what I paid so much if it was for a one time fee. But an annual payment at that rate is ridiculous. Can't see registering it in Maine, not sure how I could do that, would I need an address or residence?? And it can be done on line?? Sound dicey pulling a big ole trailer down the road with non matching plates between the tow vehicle and trailer. Seems any smokey not asleep, would notice, then your subjected to 80 million questions about the load, insurance, yada yada.

My gooseneck in Idaho was $30 for 5 years, or $50 for 10 years, no inspection other than a VIN check when you first register.

My trailer in California is $10 for 5 years. They went to perm plates on trailers here about 10 years ago. RVs not included, if it has a bathroom it is registered just like cars, a % of the purchase price that is on a ten year scale until it hits a set amount and then it doesn't go any lower.

Now Ohio is the opposite, RVs plates are relatively inexpensive. Put a porta potty, sink and air mattress in a gooseneck horse trailer and the license plates drop 70 or 80%.

I can see the state charging high fees for contractors using gooseneck trailers every day, but I think mine has been only used once or twice this year. Too bad they don't have farm or non-commercial use rates but then too many people would cheat.
