Case 446
Hi folks,
I just bought a Case 446-77 in fair running condition with a rototiller, 2 way woodsplitter, plow and snowblower. Has an Onan engine. Paid $1350 for the tractor. I felt it was a fair price in veiw of the atttachments that were all in good condition.Tires, chains and wheel weights all look good. I'd like to use this to grow food for local food pantries and soup kitchens. I have a two acre plot that used to be a chicken farm. I'm looking to do a complete overhaul this winter and would appreciate all the advice you can give me i.e. parts distributors, manuals and your acquired knowledge. I also have a huge wood splitter with a 1954 Wisconsin TFD that was built in the Bango and Aroostock Locomotive fabrication shed. The motor ran when I bought it, but won't start now. I want to do an over haul on that engine as well. I have a complete tool shop and am retired so I have time, but I can always use advice. Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Jim.

Sounds like you got a real good deal on your tractor purchase considering all of the implements you got with it.

Enjoy!

Yeah
It seems like a good deal, but i haven't really started spending yet. A friend is bringing up the J34 woodsplitter and the rototiller tonight. I couldn't carry all that weight in my F150 and trailer. I'm building a quick project garage to hold all the loot. Lucky that I have a couple of tool shops and a small barn to work on this stuff. It's getting cold up here.
Jim:thumbsup:

Great little tractor. I have owned a Case or Ingersoll for the past 22 years. Very Solid!:D Down side is the Onan Engine can be very costly to rebuild. If the comperssion is good I would probaly just change the points, maybe touch up the valve and seats and clean the heads. One thing I have changed a couple of since I have owned it and are not cheap is the vacuum fuel pump which is intergrated in the carburator. The engine itself is a good engine. Post some pics!

Thanks for the site Coobie,

When I bought the 446 someone had removed the PTO clutch linkage. I just bought a replacement (for $.99 on eBay!) but in looking at the Eastmann posted Case manual for my year (1977) it looked like the linkage handle was much shorter. I may be mistaken, but I hope the new linkage does the job. At any rate, I'm just out the shipping and I'll hang on to it. The more I discover about the 446, the more I realize what a great deal I got on the tractor and attachments.
I am going to need to put a more ergonomic seat in, though as I'm 6'4" and weigh 250 weith bad disks and hips. The seat seems to have been designed for a shorter, skinny gardener. Any suggestions for a replacement seat (higher and wider)?

I just bought a higher new seat(ingersoll) for my 4020 and they are EXPENSIVE $150.I would try to go to a local tractor supply store and try to match up a bolt pattern with my orginal seat.It might save you some $$$.coobie

Hi Jim, here's a couple thoughts....Seats are available via catalog at northerntool.com and probably at farm stores such as Tractor Supply. You know, I always wondered how a big guy could get into the Case seat. I'm 5'4" and 145 lbs and fit just fine. Although my Case 448 (18 HP Onan) engine has about 2000 hrs (1983 model) it was well cared for so I just replaced some engine shrouds, points/condensers, plugs and cleaned the carbon out of the heads a couple times. I'm not a machinist/mechanic person however, and probably wouldn't try anything more complicated. If the compression is good, maybe you wouldn't have to tear it down. Onan engine parts are still available from small engine dealers e.g.jackssmallengines.com or joesoutdoorpower.com or jimsrepairjimstractor.com. The last two I've never actually done business with. Good luck with your venture.
