i came here not wanting to see carnage, but the title of the topic really didn't fit what i saw in the video. if this is actually joel and child having a little responsible fun in the yard i would have titled the post something to that effect, instead of a topic asking 100's of strangers whether it is safe. if you have to ask if it's safe, then maybe you shouldn't have done it in the first place. for pete's sake, you were having a slow ride and tow around the yard with your child. if we now need to decide whether a 5mph tow around the yard is criminally unsafe, then we've lost as a society. you're not moving much faster than a brisk walk. you could do as much damage by walking and falling on an icy patch.
literally hours before i saw this post i was watching the news and they had a segment on children and adults going sledding down hills in the winter. they had full screen overlays of the number of injuries and how many were traumatic head injuries. it was pretty much your basic everyday shock journalism segment that litters the airwaves now. it's coming to the point where if you let your child go sledding, you're going to be branded an irresponsible parent. it's already hit that point with bicycles. your child has to wear a helmet now. i'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but if someone saw you let your child on a bicycle without a helmet they would not think much of your parenting skills, even though i can guarantee that they never wore a helmet at that age. certainly, things change over time, and safety is not a bad thing, but we are overcritical of it now. did you have bad parents because they let you do things that could have caused an injury?
you will find hundreds of posts from people here about it being unsafe to operate tractors with modified or removed rops, though all of us who aren't all that old grew up using tractors built long before rops existed. certainly they have saved lives since their inception, but rops, like bicycle helmets, or any other safety device is not a replacement for responsible parenting or just plain teaching common sense. you might as well make a post asking: "am i a bad parent because i let my child eat fast food?"
if your video showed your young child goosing the throttle to try to dump you off, then i'd be right there with the safety nazis telling you to do a little educating to possibly prevent some future irresponsibility, but i wonder if there's really a need to try to find problems where they don't exist.
