I recently bought gas from the filling station at Fortt Hood. Didn't think anything of it at the time, but that gas has played havoc with my chain saws and gas weed eater. The gas caps on the chain saws have swollen to the point where they must be removed with pliers and the brand new Echo weedeater carbuerator is fouled to the point that it will not reach maximum rpm. In case anyone is skeptical, I have had the saws for several years and have had no problem until I used that gas. The weedeater problem was confirmed by the repair shop doing the warranty repairs.
It appears to be another example of our Federal government helping us out.

I still have the choice for now at every pump in town (both of them) of regular or ethanol. I hope that doesn't change.

E10 has been in use here in NJ for at least five years now. Ethanol has replaced MTBE as the oxygenate.

I've had no problems with my lawm mower, chain saw, snow blower, roto tiller, weed wacker or my automobile after the switch. In fact, I haven't even noticed a drop in fuel economy.

I've read that there're issues with ethanol and power boats and that that has to do with ethanol and the propensity for water in power boat fuel tanks.

I don't think the government has anything to do with your small engine problems.

I agree with you, Keegs, and I am not saying it is, but the Gov't is mandating the use of ethanol.

I've used ethanol for years and years in everything and have never had a problem. Cars, tractors, other 4 cycle engines. I also use it in my 2 stroke chainsaw, weed eater, leaf blower, and snow blower.

I also have used for more years then care to mention and never had a fuel related problem from it. We have choice and choose ethanol every time I fill.

I'm not sure how long we've had the ethanol in our gas, and I wouldn't know where to get any as without ethanol, but I, too, have had no problems at all so far (knock on wood).:)

You need to read more forums Moss, if you did you would know that that is impossible.

Maybe the station received a load of gas that was not mixed correctly? Too many people have had problems with gas, but since we don't really know what comes out of the nozzle, it's hard to pinpoint the actual issue.

It seems to eat up fuel lines. I worked on one older chainsaw that the fuel line had turned into a brown puddle of goo in the bottom of the fuel tank. And I just had to replace the fuel lines in my weedeater- they were the consistency of cooked pasta.

E85 or E10? My experience is that E10 doesn't damage fuel lines.

E10 has been the norm around here for years, just as i suppose that's what's available in Moss Road's area. Never had a fuel line go bad yet.

In Arkansas I had the fuel lines fail on a less than 1 year old craftsman weadeater and a ~5 year old Weateater brand leaf blower both using E10.

I am trying to avoid E10 in small engines.

Yeah. I started putting ethanol in my cars in the mid 80's. They called it gasohol. It was 10% ethanol. It was a big deal back then as they built an ethanol plant here in South Bend, Indiana in 1984. At the time, it was the world's largest ethanol plant. It is still up and running today. The plant was buying corn from local farmers and it was a big deal. There were semi trucks sitting in lines loaded with corn along the highway. So, I can honestly say I have been using 10% ethanol for 25 years and have never had any fuel system failures. ;)

Since some have had such failures and some of us have not, it would APPEAR that perhaps some manufacturers are using different material for their fuel lines. And even within the same brand or manufacturer, maybe different years have seen some changes in the composition of the lines.

DISCLAIMER: No scientific knowledge; just speculation.

Bird,

It's OK to speculate, but please don't do it on the floor.
