what is considered "low hours"?

I'm about to buy a Case 580E with extended hoe, it's an 85, 2wd, and has 3800 hours on it. Seems to run great and everything works on it. I'm paying $8500. What I want to know is, would 3800 hours be considered many hours?

So should I not consider this machine? Is 3800 hours too many hours to consider buying it? I also have a chance to buy a Ford 555, only twenty hours on a rebuilt diesel motor. Priced at $7500 is a better deal, but has a few hydraulic leaks, nothing too major. Considering the number of hours though on a rebuilt motor, would I be better to go with the Ford 555? No extended hoe on this one. If we are talking Case vs. Ford, what does everyone think? A rebuilt motor with 20 hours does seem pretty good..... talk to me everyone, I can use the advice!

A well manintained Diesel engine should last 9000-10,000 hrs before rebuild. A rebuild is good, if done properly. I always wonder why someone is selling or trading in a recent rebuild after spending 2000-3000. I would want to see some rebuild receipts. . If I rebuild one, I plan on keeping it a while. I prefer Case over Ford. Just my 2 cents. Ken Sweet
