mine says 100mbps. Is that mega bits per second? Is that right seems high?

That is likely the connection from the modem to your PC..

The modem to the DSL likely peaks at 10 meg down 1 meg up...

UNLESS your in the pacific rim.... I have heard of 1GIG over there....

The local phone co in my small town (3000) has started installing fiber to the home. At this time they are offering 20 megs for 70 bucks with a 1 meg upload. I know all the local guys for the company and they said 20 megs is the limit right now because of the main frame system right now. But that is supposed to change in 5 or so years and we maybe approaching a 100 meg by then .

All bets are off with fiber..
When FTTH is installed, the limiting factors are the fiber converter and the aggegation device. With the fiber converter being a means of slowing down the connection at the customer edge.

Today we have fiber lasers that can go to 40 GIG..
Now I dont see that as happening at the home..
BUT 1 Gig lasers are available for as little as $60 for the laser and then a couple hundred for the device they fit in.

At work we have the business equivilent of this.. Metro Ethernet.

Fiber To The Home (FTTH) is basically making a large network.
the limiting factor of the "mainframe" is the size and capabilities of the aggregation device. I have heard some calling the mainframe refereing to the large racks of equipment.. That device(s) could be loosely equated to a main power panel. if you have a 200 amp panel at home, you can over-subscribe it to 300 amps with large breakers quickly, but when it hits that 200 AMP of draw it trips the main breaker.

On the Internet, when the aggregate speed of all the users (breakers 15 amp to 100 AMP) hits the limit of the aggregation device (main panel breaker-200 AMP) then you get 1 of 2 things:
1. Everyone slows down..
2. Everyone looses connection as the box crashes/restarts or acts unusually.

So if the box can handle 1 GIG (1000 Meg) of throughput, and the total users at 10 meg into that box equal a load of 2 Gig, normally you just slow down. Some software bugs have caused some really squirrelly problems. I have personally spent untold overnight t/s events sorting out some of the software bugs. They are lots of fun to work on!!!

Anyway, as the back bone of the Internet gets faster, the home and business users will go faster.... I foresee speed in the GIG range in 4-8 years to be common place for business and 40-500 meg to be commonplace for home users. Today, GIG Internet is doable, but very $$$$. I have at least 15 customers doing 50 meg + of bandwidth. A few are in the 100 Meg range..
I guess we all know where I go to download those DVD's???

Some of the new video streaming technologies will demand it. Believe it or not, but GOOGLE is one of the larger Internet backbone providers in the US....

and if I did not bore the hound out of you....
you just might be a hightech tractor owner!!!!

I understand most of what you said radartech. I was just putting everything in laymans terms. The companys here a putting new infrastructure in everyday. you should see the physical room the telco has after getting rid of almost 80% of their copper. The problem they have is the backbone fiber is there but the equipment of the other end just isn't that capableyet. we have another small town in the area that the cable co was bought by the telco 10 years ago and they laid fiber then. That town is wired like crazy. rumors of close to 100 meg capabilities. all in all just trying to say what a great deal we are getting with this fiber. plus when the telco laid fiber in its first area of town the cable co started hanging fiber throughout. My apologies.
Was not meaning to insult or anything of like that.

yeah-- 100 meg media converters can be had cheaply..
$200 or so.. for an unmanaged end point...

I had a 3M DSL connection, phone company offered a free upgrade to 5M so I took it. Seems the technology is changing, I tried to get the 10M but was too far away from the equipment, which has nothing to do with McDonalds or the nearest traffic light. Try this to test your connection, or this. I use these to test and make sure I am getting what I am paying for, sometimes there is a minor problem that can be corrected. Remember it is up to the speed you are paying for, not always possible for the advertised speed, mine clocks in at 4.36M, fine for me.

Speedtest showed me i have 3.01 meg download and .64 upload speed. That seems right i think i pay for 3meg DSL.

   / DSL is here - YEA! #29
Hmmm, 19.6 download speed and 4.7 upload.

We've had FIOS (fiber to the home) since it became available.

It is nice.

My speed test shows 2.81 download on veizon wireless embedded card. Great for my area when before town got fiber it was 3 meg or under.

.73 down and .56 up over Verizon Wireless -
You guys who have DSL or cable available make me jealous.

I've got the DSL but only 1.5 speed instead of 3 like some folks have. However, it's OK.

OK, so this thread is over 6 months old, but this morning, CenturyLink upgraded my DSL to the 10M speed. Whooo boy, it's quick.;)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/1229793527.png

Jealous I am. :D

We have CenturyLink but can only get 1.5M service. A mile to the west of us, away from the central office, they have faster service. The service runs down the road in front of us but they did not bring the service down our road.

Dan, I was under the impression that fiber optic was necessary to get the 10M DSL so I had some doubts when the lady Monday told me she could upgrade it to 10M. The technician just changed some wires in the box on the side of the house, then came in and found we still had 1.5M (actually 1.42 download), so he got his laptop out the truck, hooked it to my less than a month old modem (their modem, of course) and said there was the problem. He brought a new modem in from the truck and that fixed it.

Bird I wish it was that easy for us.

The last time the tech was at the house, he told us about the service being on the next road west of us, and NOT available for our neighborhood. I think we need a box to send the service down our wire and I sure wish they would put in the danged box.

Later,
Dan

Jeez Bird! Now that you have 10 Mbyte DSL and a new knee, nobody will be able to keep up with you.:laughing:

Congratulations!
