Yes, if you are a criminal you can take your plates off but then you will get stopped for no plates.

The link above clearly states that the cameras are used to search for license plates that fall into 4 databases:
1. wanted felony vehicles
2. local wanted vehicles
3. stolen vehicles
4. lost or stolen license plates.

I WANT the police to catch these criminals and am very happy that they have this technology available to them.

If you don't want the police to catch these criminals then I won't feel bad if your car is the next one to get stolen.

There is no mention of them using these cameras for minor offenses such as no safety inspection or no insurance.

Have you seen the show "Parking Wars"? In different cities the parking enforcement officers drive around and run peoples license plates to see if they have outstanding (delinquent) parking violations. If they do, they "boot" the vehicle and impound it to collect the fines they are due.

In MD you need proof of insurance, from the insurance company, in order to register your vehicle. I can't find anything that says you have to carry a slip of paper in the vehicle, but you must be able to provide your policy number in the event of an accident.

"When the MVA requests a proof of insurance, a Maryland Insurance Certification (FR-19) is the only acceptable form of verification. The ID card and actual policy are not acceptable."

Here is a good one.

I got pulled over in a suburb of St. Louis for speeding. The police officer asked for license and proof of insurance. I gave him my license and insurance card.

He leaves and goes to his car.

He comes back and says he'll give me a warning on the speeding BUT gives me a ticket for not having correct proof of insurance. The insurance card I gave him was for my wifes car ... not mine.

Oh, I say. I'm sorry. I then give him the insurance card for my car.

He says he has already written the ticket and can't do anyting about it. I have to go to court.

I say, "why didn't you come back and ask me about the card before you wrote the ticket"?

He says "I don't know".

So, I have to go to court. The ticket gets thrown out but my goodness.

The guy is nice enough to give me a warning on the speeding but then writes a ticket on the wrong insurance card????

Go figure.

That's awesome! :thumbsup: The presenter said they scan 3-4 thousand plates per shift for lost, stolen, criminal, etc... vehicles. Just think of the hours that thing will save and the potential for vehicle recovery. Fantastic!

Why PO'd at the LEO? He's just doing what he is paid to do...if you are going to be upset, direct it at yourself. The officer didn't do anything wrong. You did.

I don't think he's pissed at the cop so much as the system. I tend to agree.

A lot of vehicles with multiple parking tickets and toll road violations are vehicles where the registeration was never changed over from the prior owner.

There is nothing stopping them from using the information in other ways. I don't consider myself a tinfoil hat type, but gather enough random information and use existing technology to correlate and organize it; you have a powerful system capable of impinging upon personal privacy that no one ever voted for. If given the chance to vote in favor of such a system, I doubt it would pass. Plus, there are no defined laws or regulations as to it's use or limits.

I agree that much technology can be used in ways other than originally intended.

One thing that comes to mind, in Louisiana on the way to Grand Isle there is a toll bridge with no toll booths, just cameras. You must stop on the highway on the way there at a kiosk and purchase a ticket on a computer where you enter your license plate number and the camera reads your license plate as you cross the bridge and it automatically sends tickets to those who have not paid for passes.

I see where this could be easily rigged to the police network to notify them if certain license numbers are entered into the computer and they could easily catch the culprit on this island with only one way on and off.

This could be very bad for anyone who was breaking the law. Maybe some criminals will think twice before going to Grand Isle and make this one of the safest places to be.

Out in Vay, where I live, most all roads are dirt and posted at 35 MPH. No one however, does the speed limit here, including me. The other day, I was coming home on my local dirt county road at a 60 MPH clip. I came around a slight curve just several hundred feet from my driveway when I saw a couple gumball machines just ahead. Two cops had someone pulled over in the on coming lane, all parties facing me. I slowed down. Way down, and passed both cops then picked up my speed again. I saw in my rearview mirror, the cop in the rear, hit his brakes, then the back up lights. I was already passing 50 MPH and went over a hill as the cop went flying backward turning around, just as I disappeared out of site. I went a very short distance and then in my driveway and up and over another hill and kept going as fast as I could down my quarter mile long driveway, went into my open garage and got out and shut the door quickly. I waited for what seemed to be several minutes. Nothing. I came out of the garage and shut the door and was walking back to the house with my chainsaw that was in the back of my truck, when 2 cops come screaming down my driveway. I told them I had no idea on the truck they were looking for and that I had just been working around the place all day. They politely but eagerly wanted to see my license, and I told them I hadn't been driving and that they were on private property. My other car, a Rav 4, was sitting in the yard. They reluctantly left, and I called my lifelong friend who has no license and expired tags and was actually on his way home, down the street from me, and let him know that the cops were watching our street, big time. He went over to a friends house for the night. I hopped in my Rav a bit later, and went down the road with some highlighter paint and put a large sign in the middle of the road out at the intersection to help save our local folks some money! My truck is going to be sitting in the garage for a bit, as it had old plates on it too! The Rav will be the commuter for now! Just super glad to have been able to not only save myself some money and a record, but also some other people some money too

I'd like to think that everyone coming on to this road, saw my huge painted warning in the road, and drove accordingly, and that those 2 cops sat there for hours waiting for the speeder that suddenly never came, and upon driving out of the area, saw my sign and then figured it out!
