Growth on horse's hoof, any vets around?

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations. :)

In defense of our only local equine veterinarian, I can understand his position although it doesn't please me. After many years of working on horses in the field he found that he can treat 3 or 4 dogs in his office in less time than he can do one horse in the field and make three times more money.

Our area has become more urbanized with less horses and more dogs and higher prices on everything for his clinic.

We very badly need more equine vets in this area but since dog vets make so much more money it is doubtful that we will ever get more and probably even less as the years pass. :(

There is only one equine vet in each of our neighboring parishes and they do make house calls (for enough $$$) but I do prefer our only vet.

With vets needing almost as much training as specialized doctors for humans it is a wonder that there are as many as there are considering how much more they could be earning as doctors.

We have a shortage of farriers in our area also. We had to change farriers last year after ours went up to $120 to shoe a horse when he came to our barn and did 5 at a time. Last year he claimed making over $100,000 on his tax return. Not bad for a profession that people predicted would disappear after automobiles came on the scene.

Interesting observations.

I never really looked it up before, but it looks like 8 years of college to become a vet. One summer of internship.

Maybe the ROI is better for farrier school :)

And as far as that old large animal Doc who won't make house calls, he needs to be snubbed up and horse whipped....:D

Agreed. Even my cow vet makes farm calls...if I'm willing to pay the price.
