Bumble bees pack a pretty good wallop, too. Its a good thing they aren't very aggressive.
When I find a ground-nest of bees or wasps/hornets in a place I don't want it to be, I wait until late evening, then drop a couple of mothballs down the hole and set a rock or board or something over the hole. This usually does them in for me. I'd be a bit more hesitant to pour gasoline on the ground, though the man (or is that little boy) in me says the fireball technique could be lots of fun (well, not so much fun for the hornets)!
