Hi All,
I having been talking to people a lot of people about R4's....... And the main thing is how gentle they are on grass. I believe that they are gentle enough for finish mowing and do not rip up grass. Almost all the people that i talked to said they rip up grass. Is that true or are they think of R1's????

In my experience they were very easy on the grass. R4's not filled on a 790, so its kinda light. But it would get slippery on hills when there was any moisture. I'm talking a bout going sideways on a hill.

I haven't had a problem with R4s on grass...but knowing my 24 is heavier than a riding mower, I tend to stay off the lawn when it's wet and don't use 4WD when mowing...well, there are a couple places where I need it, but I take it out of 4WD asap and avoid turns.

I think if you've got firm dry soil, it should be ok once in a while. Turfs are your best bet for regular use. R1's are hel* on turf, even dry ground. The same weight is distributed over a larger contact area with R4's, and more so with turf tires. They will stress the grass over time imo

I mow my 3 acres with my 3940 and loaded R4 tires. I leave the loader mounted but usually take off the bucket for cooling and visibility. The only issue I have is making turns on the hill. Otherwise I don't have any issues.

Hmm. I wonder about filled R-4's. Would that make big a difference ? - more weight...

R4s arent to bad on my Dad's lawn. We use it in 4x4 Low on the lawn though because the hill is so steep. We dont get much damage at all unless we go out when its wet out. Otherwise, it is compleatly fine.

Been driving my loaded R4's around here on the very wet grass. So far I have not noticed and major damage. I was out looking around today and it appears that they marks that I did make are starting to go away in less than 2 days time.

I just use R1s an forget it.
Not a problem on the smaller tractors.

I mowed for years with loaded R4s. No problem at all as long as I stayed off wet areas and out of 4wd.

I used R1's on my BX2200 for six years without any damage and am in my second year with my BX2660 using weighted R4's. I also have R4's on my John Deere 2305 on another property and have been pleased with their performance. I see no place for turf tires on my mowers due to the inclines and FEL use.

My loaded R4's on my L3830 Kubota will rip up wet grass or if it is in 4 WD. The dry grass tolerates the R4's

I have mostly hillside and some level. I have used Turfs and R4's for 6 years, some rears loaded and some not. BX's, B's and an L. No damage and I always use 4WD. Wet grass on the down hill is scary. Won't do it again, guess they were R4's. I won't do wet grass down hill again no matter which ones I have on. Just remember for some people whatever they have is the best and for some people what they don't have is bad. Just filter responses.

Yes, be careful on the hills when wet and running R4's. Watched my friend almost get killed on his L3000 when it broke loose on a hill. He did not have it in 4 wheel drive which would have helped. Scared the heck out of us.
I've also learned 4 wd on hills always, the brakes aren't worth much, just try it one time on a short semi steep slope and you will learn yourself. Sort of like telling a child, don't touch the burner a hundred times, once they touch it you don't usually have to tell them again.

And some people have what they do because after trying/owning all types, they settle on what works best for them.

I have machines with Ag, turf, orchard, and R4. Each has the tires I have found through experience to work best for their application.

I mow only in 4WD. The R4,s did a lot of scuffing when turning sharp and steering slightly up hill. With the slopes on my property, I have little choice. I recently bought a set of turfs for the front but have yet to try them on grass.

I went for a wild ride going down a steep slope on my lawn in 2WD. Not a real long slope but still scary when the rear end starts to go sideways. Tought me quick to stay in 4WD going down hill.
Later I was driving down a long steep gravel log road in 2Wd. (yea, slow learner) The rear tires started slipping and then just totally lost all traction while the tractor just kept sliding faster and faster. Real scary. Since the bottom of the hill was still a long ways away, I slammed on the brakes and jambed the tractor into 4WD and the slidding stopped. Took me several hours to get calmed down from that ride.
Weather dry or wet, grass or gravel, use 4WD going down any steep hill.
