Heard this one on the scanner this morning, when a officer responded to a "911" hang up the reason given the person was trying to see if you have to dial the 9 to get 9 1 1

Our phone lines changed not too long ago... it was "9" to get outside line then, two common area codes, 919 and 910 got many false calls so now we dial 7 to get an outside line... a guy down the hall found out that you just don't hang up after you mis-dial 911

A friend of mine was showing her daughter how to dial 911 on her cell phone. She made sure to turn the phone off first, and then they both dialed it several times. She wanted to make sure they knew how to do it.
911 called back. It turns out that even if your cell phone is turned off, it will still dial 911.

Who would have guessed? I know a phone line taken out of service by the telco can still call 911.

Our fire district puts on an open house once a year. We have some of the dispatchers come and set up a booth where the kids can actually call 911 and talk to a real dispatcher. They have scenarios they walk the kids through, and help them feel more comfortable with calling 911. It's a great way to let the kids practice without risking a knock on the door from a County Mounty.
