I am going to look at a 1962 Ford 4000 tomorrow ..... I have come to the conclusion I cannot afford the tractor I "want" right now so I am looking to buy something to get me by a few years.

Anyway, the guy tells me the hydraulics work great unless you let the tractor sit for a long period of time (months) and then you have to "loosen a screw and some air will come out ... then they work fine again".

This sound like a common problem with these tractors? Easily fixed? Enough reason to walk away from the tractor?

here is the ad:

Ford 4000 1962, Rebuilt motor, decent paint, 60% rubber, 47hp, rare tractor, live power, runs great, looks good, with bush hog no power steering $2000.

I think that most tractors will have a little air in the system some where. If it is throughout the system, it is probably coming from a suction leak. Replace or tighten the hose. If the air is in the cyl, raise and lower the FEL several times, the air should be purged.

The hydraulic pump is located above the static level of the oil in the reservoir. The pump's shaft seal is leaking, allowing air in and the oil to drain back into the reservoir. The tractor needs a pump rebuild and if the seal land on the pump driveshaft is scored, a shaft replacement. Not a big deal if you have the time and talent, or access to someone who does. In my market, the tractor would be a fair deal even with this flaw if the tractor was properly represented in the ad.
