WWII Aircraft Carriers only in Pacific?

We have a winner!

The USS Albacore AGSS-569 is on display in Portsmouth, NH. It was built as a test submarine for hull shapes, propellers, and propulsion system testing. It's top speed was in excess of 33 knots submerged.

I took a tour of this sub back in 1995 when we first moved to Maine. I think it is still open.

One thing I distinctly remember was how the bunks had very low clearance, I couldn't believe anyone could actually use some of them.

Dave.

Forgot to mention that the USS Card that my FIL served on during WWII was sunk in Saigon Harbor (1964) by sappers, was brought up two week later and was eventually torn apart for scrap metal in 1970. Overall served the navy for 30 yrs.

Locally, we have the USS Hornet, CV-12, museum.

I have been meaning to go see the Hornet at Alameda NAS.

Interesting thread.

My FIL was a Marine aviator in WW2. He was first a navigator on R4D2s in
the South Pacific. That was the Marine designation for the Army's C47,
aka DC3. He then trained in FL to pilot F4U Corsairs, but the war ended
before he saw combat. He met my MIL, who served in the Navy in WW2
(WAVES) as a code breaker. They were about the first of GI Bill recipients
at the U of Kansas.

The USS Hornet is very interesting to tour. They have specials, where they do flashlight tours to area's not normally open to the public. There is a ton of area's that are not open; they do not have the funds nor people to do it. It is definitely something to plan to spend a few hours at.

Across the bay, is the USS Pampanito. It is a WWII diesel sub. Fun to tour; very short tour though.

The F4U is my ultimate favorite plane :D

My nephew's cub scout troop spent the night on the USS Pampanito this year...

Yes, I really enjoyed the Pampanito in SF maybe 20 years ago. I also
toured another WW2 sub, the USS Drum in Mobile Bay, next to the
battleship USS Alabama. A Corsair used to sit outside next to the battleship;
I heard it got damaged in Katrina.

I mentioned this in passing, but thought I would offer a little more info...

If any of you are involved with Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, or other church or youth groups, seriously consider a trip to some of these ships.

The USS Hornet, USS Pampinto, USS Midway, USS Lexington, and a number of other ships, offer overnite programs for youth groups. Some also offer family nights.

http://www.uss-hornet.org/groups/overnightscouts/

I have taken Cub Scouts to the USS Hornet 1st. Have taken our Boy Scouts twice, and been once with my sisters Cub Scout pack.

Everyone meets at the ship at 4:30 pm. The crew comes out to greet each group, and give some absic instruction. In our case, we have always gone on a Saturday.

The overnite program lets just the youth groups on the ship. They go thru an orientation, and then stow thier gear at thier bunks. You bunk in the same bunks the original crews used.

The group then has a little bit of time with the "crew", describing the operations and history of the ship.

From there, you go and eat in the dining/mess halls.

After chow, you explore the ship till 11pm. They have extra docents on hand, and really make an effort to show the kids around, and also talk about parts of the ship. Most docents served in the US armed forces. One of the docents I am acquainted with(I posted his youtube video) served on the USS Hornet.

At 11pm, for the adventerous, there is ghost stories in the F'ocsle.

Next morning, you get up, stow your gear, and have chow in the mess hall. After that, they do a flag ceremony. You're released after that. As part of the overnite program fee, you get to stay as along as you want that second day.

For Boy Scouts, most ships offer a few merit badges. In this case, instead of showing up at 4:30 pm, you show up at 8:30am. They take the boys aboard, and they participate in the merit badge program until 5pm. At that point, the join the rest of the groups as part of the overnite program.

http://www.uss-hornet.org/groups/meritbadge/

My son earned Aviation and Radio merit badges during two of our trips to USS Hornet. For Aviation, he did a preflight on an F14 they had on board. For Radio, they talked to someone across the Bay. Afterwards, the docent happened to catch someone fro northern South America on the radio. A couple boys got to talk to them.

USS Hornet also does Space Exploration merit badge. USS Hornet picked up a couple of the Apollo missions; Pres Nixon was even on board for one of those Apollo recoveries. Some of the Apollo artifacts are on the Hornet.

As part of the overnite program, you get a junior crew member patch, and a junior crew member certificate. Part of the cerificate is also a free admission coupon...

If you work with any youth groups, I would highly recomend these programs. We have had a GREAT time every time we went.
