Is there any way to tell for sure if charge pump is bad in my cub cadet 3186. It will not move, deck will not go up or down and steering won't work. I wrote here before and verified drive shaft is spinning, has new cub hydro filter and cub hydro oil, has been purged. I guess next step is pull fenders off and replace pump? Any suggestions/hints would be greatly appreciated.

There is a key on the input shaft of the pump. Even thou the driveshaft is turning if the key is sheared the pump shaft may not be. I would pull the driveshaft and input shaft adapter to check the key.
I uploaded the 3000 series service manual here Cub_Cadet_3000_Series_Service_Repair_Manual.pdf

There is a section in it on replacing the adapter with a new style one that doesn't use the key just Loctite to hold it from spinning on the shaft.

My guess is still charge pump. I have heard a couple of people say that they have replaced the charge pump through the seat opening. I have done a couple and just pull the fenders off as I like to check out the bushings for the hydro linkage. If you do pull the pump off make sure to pay attention at how it comes apart. When it is off look at the rotor assembly that is part of the charge pump assembly, my guess is that it has broke apart. The rotor assembly can be bought separately but make sure that nothing else is damaged. Good luck and keep us updated.

Hi, I am working on a 3165 which sounds the same. Owner had the same issues, would not move, power steering wouldn't work, deck would not raise or lower. I took apart the charge pump and found the gears that goes over the pump shaft to be broken. Looks as though the shaft may have been damaged also. I think the gear was spinning around and wore down the splines on the shaft. I will contact the homeowner to see what he wants to do. This is going to be pretty pricey.
This one shows the shaft

Here is the gear

And a close-up of the gear with a piece missing that I never did find.

I ordered the charge pump today. Talked to a mechanic at the JD dealer that handles the Cubs & showed him the gear. He said he has seen the same thing happen and changed several of them. He couldn't really say why that happens. Hopefully, the shaft is not damaged too much. Owner agreed to trying the charge pump first before going the next step, which I really don't want to do, changing the shaft.

Are you going to replace the whole charge pump or just the rotor section. I have replaced a few of them for friends and have gone both ways depending on if there are metalic flakes present. Hopefully you will not need to change the shaft.

Scratches on the charge plate. Can't that chance.

Ron, great pics and info! I just can't imagine what would cause this type of (what appears to be) shock damage to these metal parts. Bad metallurgy? PRV not lifting as needed? Misalignment somehow? Interesting stuff. I'd hate to be on the receiving end. I feel for the owners. You buy a premium machine and whadda you get.

I got the charge pump put on Saturday. I had trouble getting it to pick up oil. Made several phone calls & got different opinions on if it needed primed or not. Tried a few things & still couldn't get it to pick up. Took it out one more time. Inspected o rings on the pick up tube & the o rings on the charge pump. Didn't see anything wrong anywhere. Put it together & this time it worked. Don't have any idea why it didn't work the first two times I put it in. Glad it works now. One other thing to note; the gyrotor gear does not fit in the ring like I show in the picture and there is not a piece missing. I should have taken a picture of the new gear. Nolan, are you sure you got the wrong part?

I hope I am wrong but it dosnt look like my broken one-although that was missing chunks. This one only has 6 teeth and the assembly has 7 is that correct? I can't find a clear picture. I have added a picture. Thank you.

Looks like all of the rotor assemblies that I have put on. Just make sure it gets put on facing the correct way.

Thanks Vince you were right, I got it on an fired it up-works great again! My appologies to Cub Cadet.

Glad it worked out for you. That rotor sure looks odd in the ring, doesn't it? I would have never thought that it fit in the ring the way it does if I didn't buy a complete pump and see it myself. I see where Vince said "make sure it is facing the correct way". I thought the one I changed looked the same on both sides.
