Need a new toilet. What is the best choice?

Too bad about the problems with the american standards. Maybe i got the one good one, but its been leak free for going on 2 years and always gives a good flush. Mines a Cadet, low flow.

As far as Toto, ive heard great things. Someday id love to have one of those fancy ones, complete with the washer and air dryer. And the lid closer! One of those and the GF would have nothing to complain about :D Pretty high tech with a price to match.

Nope, your GF will still complain even with the lid closer. You have to remember to start it closing...seems I can't quite get the point of that per my wife. :).

My suggestion is also toto but get the longest and tallest one you can fine.

As we all get older having a taller toiled makes it a lot easier going down and coming back up.

I bought one on the net it was the cheapest price plus it was delivered to the door.

Agree on the ADA types. My first one must have been build for midgets. Even with a 'seat extension' after I had my hips done, it was too low. The Toto model I replaced it with is a comfortable height but I don't think it is the full ADA compliant model.

One suggestion. Put a grab bar out at a little less than arms length and up a bit from the seated position if there is somewhere mount it. I did it for my partially disabled wife but use it myself. First time I used it I wished I had done it 20 years ago. Will never have another 'pot' without a grab bar.

My plumber brother is very high on Toto.... Now, having said that, we have, within the past two years, replaced two toilets at the ranch where we will soon retire... we bought them at Lowe's, ADA (highly recommended) and paid approx. $150... I don't remember the brand though.... Personally, if I had to do over again, I'd buy the dual-flush toilet... Love to conserve water whenever possible...

Harry, you must be gettin' old, like me. I just installed mine this past week.:D

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. Toto sure does have a good reputation. I'm a little afraid of what it's going to cost me, but after scrubbing the toilet again this morning, I'll pay whatever it takes to get a good, clean, flushing toilet!!!!

The toilet I have now is the Champion model. I was at Lowes yesterday and it's their highest rated toilet for flushing. The Kohler Cimmeron, which is one that I was thinking about only gets four stars on their rating scale, while the Champion gets five starts.

I like the idea of going commercial and will ask about that too. Of the plumbing supply houses, one is my favorite, but they don't carry Toto. I'll still go there first and see what they say, then go to the other place and ask about the Toto.

I'm envious of you who have good results with your affordable toilets. For years, I didn't think it mattered, a toilet was a toilet and you paid extra for the fancy look of it. Now that I do this for a living in remodeling homes, I've learned that even the same model from the same company will work differently from each other. It's all in the casting of the porcelain. Comsumer Reports did a test awhile ago and couldn't come up with a toilet to recomend. They said that out of the toilets they tested, the found price didn't matter, nor did the model. It was totally hit or miss as to which ones flushed well, and what ones didn't. I'm hoping that Toto wasn't in that test, but I'm also hoping that the toilet makers have gotten better at using 1.6 gallons to get the job done.

I'm tearing up tile today in my bathroom. Steph and I have decided on a 18 inch tile that we both really like from Home Deopt, so I'm good to go on the remodel. Since I'm doing the bathroom, I'm also going to do the hallway, laundry, closets and kitchen. Get it over with and finally looking nice.

Again, thank you for all your help.

A little over a year ago I put in a Kohler Memoirs comfort that my daughter gave me,She owns a kitchen and bath co. and it had been installed and the customer changed there mind and went with a different color. when I moved into this house it had those crappy little toilets that would never flush right,I was very impressed with the Kohler it has a lot of flush power and it stays clean never had a clog and it is comfortable.
Now I'm doing another bathroom in the house and just purchased another,I did check around and got some prices on the Toto but that was twice the money of the Kohler and since I still have another bath to do I will be buying another Kohler.BTW both the Kohler and the Toto are made in USA.

Eddie, last year I put a Kohler Cimmaron 2 piece in and we have never needed a second flush or a brush(except for regular hard water cleaning). The first time I flushed that thing I thought, no way is this thing going to work around here. But I must say I am really pleased with what we got.

I think I passed the 'getting old' stage. 74. Just got back with a load of locust after 3 1/2 hours of cut and stack brush. Feel like about 90 right now.

If I hada known how nice a grab bar at the toilet is 40 years ago, it would have been there.

Feel like about 90 right now.

That's the way I felt last Saturday after I mowed, edged, and trimmed our lawn, then loaded the mower, string trimmer, and electric hedge shears in the truck, drove 30 miles to one daughter's place, did all their lawn work, and came back home. And I'm still a few months short of 70.:D

After 8 years of using the dorm toilets @ Gettysburg College I have to say the pressure flush units they use act like they would flush cinderblocks. The problem is you almost need hearing protection when you hit the lever, especially in the small toilet area in the newer dorms. I can understand why people would complain about middle of the night flushes; I've heard air starters that make less noise...

Eddie,
I have a Sloan Flushmate that is pressure assisted. I've had it for 6 years and it's never required 2 flushes or any type of repair.

Really and truly, go to a good plumbing shop. The box store can order the better stuff. The box stores seem to carry just mediocre, low price stuff. I found that out when my wife and I were doing landscaping. I found out again when our Home Depot toilet leaked internally and ruined the bathroom subfloor.

I was at Lowes yesterday and it's their highest rated toilet for flushing.

I installed two Toto toilets in the new house I built last year... they work better than any other toilet I have owned... one flush is all that is ever needed! I paid under $300 each for them... be sure to get the "comfort height"... the extra height is really nice.

We bought the Toto toilets for our house when we built 5 years ago. My wife and I are not impressed with them. They were not worth the money in our opinion. Maybe we got unlucky, but just so you know, there are people out there that are not happy with the Totos...at least 2 of us anyway.

Eddie, While you are at it see if you can talk your SO into letting you install a urinal. Yuo could use the old "Lid up, Lid down" argument to justify it. The next house I build is going to have a urinal in it if for nothing else "conversation".

At the risk of being referred to as an "idiot" again for discussing non-tractor issues: :D

I have installed some of the models mentioned for customers, the winner hands down, currently is latest generation of the American Standard Cadet 3. It's quiet, reasonably priced, and as advertised it WILL flush 150 feet of tp. (Some of these pressure models a so loud they can wake the entire house). They also have a high end Cadet 4 model that is supposed be able to do 200 feet.

Unfortunately, a 1.6 gallon toilet is never going to have enough water in the bowl. And that problem is not going to change.

I guess this is just more proof that buying a toilet is a c..p shoot!:D:D:D

FYI, our Elijier's have been fine for 5 years. Though one of them took some tweaking to stop running.

Later,
Dan

Yeah but I don't like doing a mercy flush with a power flush, your bottom gets wet!! :D
