I changed mine once because the oil always looked milky. I took the top plate of of it. Sucked all the old oil out with a kerosene bulb pump. Wiped it out real good. Flushed with deisel or kerosene. There were no metal bists, no rust, no obvious water. Breather is fine. Refilled it. Still has milky oil. That was at least a year ago. Runs fine. No leaks.

I'm not messing with it again, milky oil or not.

This thread prompted me to look at mine, about a year old with maybe 10 hours on it. it was a little low, maybe 4 ounces. But-

The breather cap where you fill it and it relieves pressure was stopped up. Don't know why but something made me try to blow through it, and I couldn't.
Inside looking at it there is a small ball and spring forming a check valve to let pressure out and it was stuck. I've read where the human lungs can generate about 2psi, don't know when it would have relieved, but I couldn't do it. A shot of Kroil and poking down in there with a tool freed it up. Can blow through it now.

Went to look at the gearbox on my phd and it has no breather, just a plug.

because of the breather, moisture can / will find it's way in.
