Like anything else, this can be done prudently or not. Shortly after we built in 85 the "neighbor" (who did not live on the property...he had a small pole barn and a pond there) dragged a pile of who-knows-what in front of his barn (about even with our front porch and perhaps 100' away), lit it, threw a huge number of paint and other metal cans (including herbicide/insecticide) on top, and LEFT! The smoke was horrible, thick, acrid, and quite possibly toxic. I called the fire department. He returned about 30 minutes later to find them there and was literally enraged. Our already shaky relationship completely deteriorated. Fortunately for me he soon sold the property. Other neighbors have burned "stuff" and as long as I don't get smoke in my windows, I don't care. I do take exception when they burn tires and such, and will tell them so as politely as possible, but I am not tolerant of having to breathe burning tires when I'm on my own property.

I take a little bit of exception to these comments about 'free' landfills or recycling centers. I know what folks mean, but they really ain't free. They're more properly 'I really don't have any idea how much I'm paying, I just know I'm paying, so I never think about it' landfills and recycling centers.

And if you think healthcare is expensive now, just wait until it's free.

They have closed the Landfills around here as far as I know . I Beleive the Hauled trash goes to a trash station which I,m sure costs as well as the recycle dumpster .

I only Refer to it as being free because the store owner has it there as a service to His customers & covers the cost to have it hauled to the recycle center . But I agree Were paying for it one way or another . . Bob

Clearly, plenty of the organic stuff in a landfill decomposes because here, they collect the methane from it and use it to generate electricity.

If i could, i think I would buy futures for the landfills and pass them down through the family - they will be the gold mines of future generations (literally and figuratively) if there ever is cheap electricity to make recycling of trace metals etc more affordable. The technology exists already to make oil and natural gas from the plastics, organic waste, etc as well as to recover the waste metals. Really neat technology actually. One can take everything from old computers to human waste and make oil. They have one full size plant in the US but last i heard they were going to build future ones in Europe because the greenhouse tax credits there in effect added $40/barrel to the value of the oil they produced.

We can burn yard waste, ie tree trimmings, brush, leaves. No trash. We have a phone number to call to see if it is a burn day.

Anything else in the pile, you can be fined. Usually it is the Fire Dept that gets called.

I would check with the local Fire Dept. They should have copies of the rules for burning in your area.

I have been around a trash pile burning; it stunk real bad. But they had plastic and other junk in it.

Any people here have neighbors that burn garbage? Any ideas on how to stop them? It is nasty and it is annoying, we have to keep the windows closed when they burn.

"round here your no longer allowed to burn garbage. This is a GOOD thing.

The problem isnt the responsible neighbors that burn paper and wood products, but the idiots that throw plastic and other things into the mix.

Comparing a backyard burn barrel to a landfill is a stretch. One is a professionally managed operation that has to meet EPA and other restrictions, the other is a dude with a lighter. WHat do you think is more responsible?

Growing up, i had a neighbor that ran a drycleaner. He used to take home the lint from the bottom of the machines and throw it on the fire. I was a kid then and had no idea how dangerous that was. He was burning perc on a open fire!!! can you say Dioxin. Not only was that stupid for his own health, but it put ours in risk too, due to us living downwind. Idiots like that are why we need these restrictions.

LBrown59,
That's it. Where are the small half inch holes in the sides to promote full burning by ensuring air good flow? Makes a big difference.

Some places in California where you can't even burn clean wood in your fireplace or wood stove for heat. They add a special tax to your property tax bill and hire a couple of useless bums driving around town looking for smoke coming out of your chimney so they can fine you to increase revenue. They called that creating jobs and good for the environment... Do you really want to live in places like that???? Burn pile is essential to country living. This is what rural living all about...

I knew of that in California & was going to mention it here , but was waiting for someone from there to comment . :D . So thanks .

If I lived around anyone close I to would Respect Them as far as the burning . But I dont . But I am Very cautious with the Kansas winds as I,m surrounded by farm fields & sure dont take chances of making things worse for My farmer neighbors due to My stupidity . As someone so Kindlly put it .

As I said before Everyones Situation & area is different. It Only takes common sence & Respect for others. Which City folk dont seem to have by looking at the ditches out here when I check My mailbox & Ussually bring a few bucket fulls back with Me to Dispose of. . Bob
