I am a lawn and garden power equipment dealer in the Midwest US. I am looking at putting in a compact tractor line (even in a down economy..) to expand my product offerings. Within a 20 mile radius of my store is 1 Kubota dealer, 1 Montana dealer, 1 Cub/Yanmar dealer, 1 New Holland dealer and 1 Deere dealer. We have researched several manufacturers and feel that Mahindra is a quality product at a competitive price for our area. My question...how tough do any dealers in here feel that it will be to get the Mahindra name established with the aforementioned brands surrounding us?
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

RB, I am not a dealer. I do know something about the way humans are attracted to colors, and red is a very strong attractant. If you decided to sell Mahindra, you'd have two advantages: Reliability, and the color Red.

if you provide good service, the tractors will come close to selling themselves.
having a demo day here and there should help some, too.
Check around with the competition and see what sizes they sell the most and that'll give you an idea of what models you might want to have on hand.

good luck!

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

The more dealers the better, for what it's worth, I vote for Kioti, I know that was not your question but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Seriously, good luck,
Joel

The main reasons that we have settled on Mahindra......
(1) They already have established dealers in the southern part of our state and the northern part.
(2) They have convinced us that they are committed to establishing a stronger dealer presence in our state.
(3) In the present state of our economy, they have a new dealer program that we are comfortable with.
(4) Their equipment line compliments our current product offerings.
(5) They actively support motorsports.
We're gonna take the plunge......

with that much competition in your area, don't expect to turn much of a margin. In a highly competive area its unusual to get more than a few % on a sale. If even a third of your inventory starts collecting interest for a few months you'll be in the hole in no time. You need to be planning to support your business based on parts and service. If your not selling 100+ tractors a year its tough to really turn a good profit.

That's funny !!
Im surrounded by 3 deere 2 massey 1 kubota 1 challenger and 2 junk dealers, all whithin 25 miles.

Yet we manage to sell more tractors than most of them.
Its called a good price & service after the sale, period.

There's no magic bullet, its called price & service, word of mouth travels faster than a fancy ad.

Yes, we sell Mahindras..... lots of them !

RB,
that sounds like fair logic for picking the direction you are -- good luck!
While price may get them in the door once, customer service and support is what keeps them coming back! (and recommeding you to their friends/family)

Hope it works well for you.

Move on down to the Kansas City area. We need some competition for the one dealer in the metro area.

I know where you're coming from - I called both KC & Wichita for mine. The KC fella came in about $3k higher on his initial quote and wanted to charge for delivery to boot...
Needless to say, I decided to drive the extra hour to talk to the Wichita folks.

I am slowly beginning to "plant the seeds" that we are bringing Mahindra into our dealership. So far the enthusiasm is encouraging. We are starting out with strictly the 16 series units and we will see where we head from there.

good choice!
I looked long and hard at those before going with my 3510 - largely due to it's mass for the applications I use a tractor for.
the 16s are an excellent "bang for the buck" series, especially to get an area used to the "new" brand.

hope it works well for you!

The first 3 tractors arrived a couple of days ago. The tire kicking has begun. I am finding that people interested in compacts definitely know the Mahindra name. Now it's up to us to get the units out in the field.

Congrats on the new Mahindra's. I have been a dealer for 5 years and they have been very good. The 15/16 series are just about bullet proof. They're just as good as any tractor on the market. Good luck and good selling.

I went to the website. Where are the tractors?

My website maintainer will have info on our site next week. The tractors, we have in inventory are the 2516 gear, 2516 hydro and a 2816 gear, all w/loaders. An 1816 hydro with loader and backhoe is on the way as is a 3316 gear w/loader. We feel this a nice selection to begin with.
