Looking for a 3 pt PTO driven spreader that I can use to seed my lawn (bermuda grass) and do the yearly fertilizing and any future overseeding. I don't want to spend anymore than necessary since I'm not wealthy. Here is a link to one I found. Tell me what you think of this one or feel free to recommend a good value spreader that will fit my needs. Thank you in advance. http://www.agrisupply.com/product.asp?pn=70271 :p

That's a good price. I think I paid almost twice that for mine.

Hi phyxer--
I just finished my fourth year with the metal version of that spreader. I use it in spring and summer for seed and fert. and in winter for sand and ice melter. It's not a precision implement, but has served me very well for my needs. You can certainly pay more for better brand name equipment, but I'm happy with this unit. Regards, Mike

I don't have one yet but been looking also. Did you already check this out?

Agrex Tractor PTO Fertilizer Spreader XA250

The one you are looking is $380 and this is $566 ($186 more) but this looks like a better quality. I know you're trying to save $. But, consider this. They also sell the smaller XA150 for the same price of the XA250, so it would seems the XA250 would be a good deal. I would think the cost/quality of a metal one would out weight the cost/quality of the plastic one.

Yeah....maybe.....but wouldn't the plastic be more friendly with fertilizers? Looks like a buy to me.

If you are spreading standard prill fertilizer (sulfer coat, poly coat, etc) you will get the best results @ 4 mph ground speed & 325 rpm on the pto.

How well do these spreaders handle sand in winter for sanding laneways?

I'd go plastic for corrosion resistance. TSC has a reasonably priced one, too.

The plastic is less corrosive, but all the ones I looked at had poor paint on the frames that was coming off while on the showroom floor or yard.

I got a very good condition 350# metal spreader on Craigslist. $200. I wash mine down with a power sprayer after using fertilizer and store it on a pallet (under tarp) with a good coating of 10W-40 motor oil.

A little surface rust; that's all.

Fluid film is your best weapon for the fert vs. metal war!

Hard to believe not one manufacturer has figured out how to use a composite hopper and stainless steel parts to fling the stuff.

If it is as advertised I don't think you can go wrong with that price. One important thing is once you start using it be sure you have your pto shaft the correct length. If it pulls and puts a strain on the shaft you might have to cut some off both ends or you will end up twisting the shaft and frame.

You left out the "voice of experience" lesson here... :) Very important component for us "thicker" forebrain TBNer's! :D

Just for the record, it's dead simple to keep the metal hoppers from rusting too. Mine has spread fertilizer for 10 years now, no rust problem at all. I also spread lime. The trick is to save the paper lime bags, and use them inside the hopper as desiccants during storage periods.

Maybe it would last in your application, but rock salt? No way unless you had time to wash out the hopper and spray it down with WD40 everytime.

Most guys doing snow control don't have the time and washing off equipment is tough when it's below freezing. :(

what's fluid film lawn king?

Its an amazing lube product. If you google it, all the info on the product is on their web site. I dont even look at liquid wrench or wd 40 anymore. Fluid film is awesome!
