So, I've seen several recommendations for both Cosmo and Herd on this forum, as well as several folks posting about problems with the gates on the Cosmo units. The Herds seem to get positive reviews, but their M-12 seems awful small, and their Model 750 too expensive for homeowner use.

The parameters:

Tractor: Deere 855 MFWD (1900 lb., 25hp, 19hp at PTO)
Lawn: 3.2 acres of grass, many gardens around the house (to avoid with weed killer, etc.)
Use: Just me, a homeowner, not commercial. Six to eight rounds of fertilizer or seeding per year.

Any recommendations? I was planning to order a Cosmo P-250 tonight, until I came across several folks posting their troubles with the metering doors on their Cosmos, and simultaneous recommendations for the Herd brand (but no model numbers). Now I'm thinking of going with the M-12 instead, but it's so small and lightweight!

Hi! Yep... EverythingAttachments has some killer marketing, since they always seem to show up at the top of every search I ever make for attachments. Unfortunately, they also seem to be very expensive!

I ended up buying a Herd M-12. Was delivered yesterday, late according to their delivery estimate, so I missed using it on my spring fertilizer. I'll post how it works when I get around to my next round of fertilizer in May/June!

Sounds good. Keep us posted because I may be in the market for one in the somewhat near future. I didn't think everything attachments prices were too bad considering the free shipping and no tax. I know there are some better deals out there with a little looking. I kept thinking I would do my toothbar thru them, but I think I am going to use Iowa Farm Equipment to save a few dollars. Good luck with the Herd spreader.

The Herd M-96 is one of the best precision seeders (2-3 lb per acre of legumes) that you can buy. Cosmo will leak 2-3 lbs per acre with gates shut off. We sell both. Ken Sweet

Hi Ken,

I have looked at your listings before and I almost included a link to the used Herd you have right now, on the above post. I guess I should have. I will keep you guys in mind when I get ready for a speader. I just keep using my Earthway push type, but need to get something for the tractor eventually. Thanks, Russ
