Road being used as makeshift dump

Mandatory trash pickup stinks.
Another nearby city changed their pickup so that people had to drag the cans to the street. They raised the fees at the same time.:mad: The People were not happy to say the least.

I am fortunate to live along a dead end road, so my trash load is pretty light along the front of my place.

I also have some property in Port Angeles on a dead end road....but unfortunately don't live there (yet). I go back once a year, only to find bags of trash, Xmas trees, brush, building materials, etc. right at the end of the road/beginning on the property. I was walking the property a few years ago and found an old chevy s-15 (?) dumped over the edge of my road. Fortunately, my only neighbor had some barricades put up at the entrance to stop the relentless traffic. There was originally a barricade gate at one time, but these trespassers decided to (somehow) drive up over it, damage it beyond repair, so they could access my property. There are still access points for 4-wheelers and dirt bikes, so they get to buzz around my property at will. And help themselves to my firewood....and setup marijuana plants on my property....but what frosts my a__s the most is every year I would post dozens of "no trespassing" signs, only to find them all removed the next year...so I guess it's OK to trespass once I rip this sign down!!??
And all the little campfire pits on the property....
So yes there are many people that are very sorry, don't give a dam about respecting the land they live in, or other people's property.
OK, now I need to get some seat time or shoot something to calm down....

Interesting responses. It sounds like most people here negotiate their own pickup with the trash haulers.

Thats great, as long as everybody is responsible (as most in this thread sound). To me trash pickup is right up there with fire and police. We all have a part in making it, having the municipality deal with it makes since as its part of my taxes like fire and police. If you give people an option, chances are they'll go with the easiest way. Its human nature, which explains the illegal dumps that started this thread.

Ive been over ALOT of back roads in my county, and have only found 2 illegal dumps. And these dumps would only be a few truck loads. Most of the stuff at these places was C&D or furniture/appliances, not too much bagged household trash. My suspicion about them is that it was done by a small time hauler who got paid to pick the stuff up, and rather than pay the tipping fee they threw it in the woods. We have a lot of fly by night "carpenters" and "odd job" types around here. The road in question is only about 5-10 miles from the dump.

All our bottles and electronics have a deposit. These can be returned to any of the "enviro depots" across the province. These are independent, but administered by a government / stakeholder board. Having to return all the recyclables to the store of purchase doesnt make since from a practical standpoint.

I gather from the responses that recycling isnt big in alot of places in the states? Or if it is available, it's voluntary?

I'd say recycling is pretty big in the US in general.

This really helps with beer cans/bottles too in areas that have the deposit scheme. People pick them up and make money.

I see beer bottles/can on the side of the road all the time, usually the malt liquor brands. I can't believe people drive around drinking, but they do.

In WA, you can now return your electronics for free, but people still dump them, as the state has no advertised this at all.

Trash has to be included with the property tax, so even people who still illegal dump help pay for the people to come and pick it up.

Recycling is common in the US. When I lived in CA they would charge very high prices for garbage removal, but would take recycling free if we separated it into different bins and set it out. I watched one day and they just picked up the recycling and threw it in the same truck as the garbage.

As far as I can determine, recycling is a government-inspired effort to turn me into a garbage-picker, and to get me to stockpile garbage in my home.

My temperment is to resist this sort of nonsense.

We don't have a recycling program in my rural county but I do save all the coke cans we accumulate every week and bag them separately putting them beside the garbage cart for the garbage man personally. It helps with the service he gives like the days when I forget to put the cart out and there is never any left on the ground.

Why don't you investigate a game came and lay a few charges?

/ Road being used as makeshift dump #69
Depends on what you mean by lay a few charges.....I've gotten into my Dr Evil mode and thought about rigging up some nice flash-bangs, stringing up fishing line, camoflaging spike strips, etc. but with my luck someone would get hurt and I might feel bad/guilty and then probably get sued.

If you mean get some footage with the game cam, great idea, but I'm on the other end of the country, only get out there once a year, and don't really know anyone there that I can ask to monitor the camera.
And, with my luck, it would probably get stolen!

If you can't go regularly I guess it's a bad idea. Too bad - must be very frustrating.

We have a big farm near here that is operated by a guy who hardly ever comes to it. He has given 2 locals permission to access the land for hunting and in return they keep an eye on it. Even so (and it's entrance is only about a 1/4 mile from my house) rotten so and so's have dumped all sorts of crap in the lane. I wish people would be more respectful. Half the frustration is that most of the dumped stuff is free to have hauled away in this area.

Good luck!

We collect alum cans to sell to recylers.

/ Road being used as makeshift dump #72
We have twice a week garbage pickup for about $6 a week (mandatory on your water bill) and they are planning on adding recycling pickup again that has been halted since Katrina.

With recycling pickup, they ask you to rinse out the aluminum cans first before you put them in the recycling container instead of putting them in your garbage can and then they charge you an additional $6 amonth for this "service". Then they had the nerve to pass a law to make it illegal for people to come take these cans that you have to pay them to take. :(

Most people simply throw their cans in the garbage but still have to pay the recycling fees also.

This morning I read your thread in the safety forum.
Every time a car wrecks in your ditch out front just throw a bag of garbage in the back seat before they haul it away. You would never have to worry about trash pick-up again.:)

Mark;

Hey, got a new business venture for us.....fill up my 30' enclosed trailer with cans and bottles, and drive to MI.....$.10 per can/bottle. ;)

I keep working the principal "the more I drink, the richer I'll get" but for some reason it's not working out.... :D

I grew up in Michigan and can remember when they started the can and bottle return. It was great to be a teenager in a German household, always plenty of beer bottles to return to the store. Dad used to let us take them back for gas money. I think some others have thought of the out of state return gimmick. I've heard its a problem in some southern Michigan locations. It would be fun to see how long it would take to fill up the trailer though.;)

As for "the more I drink" principle, mine would end "the fatter I get". I've been reduced to drinking Miller "64". Its pretty sad:( :D

So I placed that call and spoke to the roadmaster last week. He said he was going to come out the next day and look at the items dumped along the roadside. The items are still there and I have not heard back from him. I intend to call back tomorrow.

When we first spoke he did tell me that anything 25' from the center of the road is the responsibility of the land owner. The land is State Game lands. (Which might explain why the idiots figured it was OK to dump the tires & shingles there...no one lives here, may as well dump it!) Let's assume these tires and shingles are indeed on game lands property. Should I call them next?

I fully understand the viewpoints of both the township and Game Commission. It's not their responsibility to clean up after idiots but they are indeed my neighbors, whether they actually live there or not. No one likes to live a road that doubles as a town dump.

When you say 25' from the center of the road, do you mean within that 25', or outside of that 25'. Outside of that 25' would make sense, inside of it would kind of tick you off. Cripe, they'd have you fixing potholes next.

I think I would call the Game Land people and atleast see what they have to say. Are they part of the State Parks Department? If they are they would certainly have the equipment to haul the tires off.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I think your calls will get results, but those results will try your patience and not happen quickly. The only quick cleanup comes when someone is afraid of being fined or losing a contract. Government agencies work slow because they have immunity from such fears. For an example, our garbage service picked up a large quantity of old motor oil someone put into the trash. They noticed the oil trail as they stopped in front of my house. Oil had been dripping out of the truck for more than a mile and it started pouring and puddling right in front of my driveway. They stopped the truck and called out their cleanup crew. The crew responded immediately and spent 1/2 a day cleaning up the road in front of my house and the whole oil trail leading up to my house. They are a private company and cannot afford to be fined by the EPA and the county.

I called back the Townshiip today and asked to speak with the roadmaster. He was not available but I was informed that he brought it up at the last Supervisor's meeting and was told that I needed to call the Game commission or the State Police.

I then called the GC and they are passing the word along to this district's "Land manager." Probably more like "passing the buck" more than passing the word. :)

Jin...they told me anything outside of 25' from the center of the road is the landowner's responsibility. I probably did not explain that very well initially.

The saga continues...I'm one step closer to calling the local TV station.
