On my BX, I use the 3" 10,000 lb rated ratchet straps. I have never had one loosen up, all of mine are less then 3 yrs old and I check for frays when attaching. My BX has no backhoe, so it is a bit lighter and I don't feel chains are necessary. We use chains and binders on all the heavier equipment, but I feel the straps are fine for the BX and they don't scratch it all up.

I would not use those 1500-3000 lb ATV straps.....I use 4 of those on an ATV, but the ATV is under 600 lbs, the BX is about 1800 I think....yours is quite a bit more I bet.

I guess my question about the rating of straps was, if I use 6 1500 pound straps, was that acceptable? Since the combined was more than 3000 lbs. But the more I think about it why chance it when the straps needed to do the jobs don't cost that much compared to the price of the tractor.

Again , you can get by with those until something goes wrong...

the 3500# straps are working load and a BS 7000#

and the 5000# BS of 10000...

If you use 4 of your straps on a 3000 machine each strap is caring 50% of its working load... Safe until you loose a strap, get hit etc...

The 10000# bs straps are $22 each....worth the cost and save your 1500 for the atv's,

For a little BX I would go get 4 2" yellow straps that have a working load of like 3,300 lbs and breaking of 10k put one on each corner any you will be set, TSC had them on sale last week & I bought 4 packs of 2 each for $27 each package, as I feel you can never have enough straps.
Yes chain works also but its hard to handle on these little BX's
We use chain on a B26 and all the big equipment, but most of the attachments we use straps and some of them weigh more than your BX.

I'm concerned about protecting my investment (in the same process I will be protecting others) more than the rules. Rules are only good if they are enforced, around here they are not not until it costs money or someone one dies.

Again I would like to thank people for their responses, the have been helpful.

Had this welded on the other day:

I do not have the Michigan book with me. I thought 4 chains were only repuired over 10,000#.

I found this for Michigan http://www.michigan.gov/documents/Cargo_Securement_Changes_75611_7.pdf

Thanks Kevin! I've been heckled by the local weighmaster (Mr Archer) so I'm a little **** about making sure things are tight.

you would think the DOT # on the side is equivalent to a flashing red light on top of the truck:mad:

I use a strap at each corner plus one over the loader and one over backhoe all 3" rated for 3500 lb WS 10,000 lb BS. I also use pieces of fire hose around the straps in areas where chafing can happen, I have the backhoe bucket on the deck and the lock on so the boom and stick can't swivel. Never had a strap come loose YET but I periodically stop and check them if travelling a longer distance. hope this is some help Gary

I 2nd the notion that a few "additional" tie down spots on the tractor make things much easier. As mentioned in another post, I use chains in the back and straps in the front. I personally get a better "feel" from ratchet straps that I do with the screw type binders.

I used to haul 6000 lb trenchers all the time and not matter how tight we made the screw binders, 5 miles down the road the chains always loosened up a bit (not a ton but some). But that was probably because we only used two chains (one looped around the front and one looped through slots in the back). Using four separate tie downs did help.
