How?

If you look at the Kubota wed site, they list the specs. I think around 6' deep for the BX series, deeper as you step up in size.

Dig a hole or dig a trench? Which small Kubota? A BX will dig 6 ft but it ain't easy you got to be right over the hole 5 is more realistic for a hole if it is trench it is gonna take a looooong time.

How deep will a small kubota backhoe dig a hole?

You can use a terracing technique to dig as deep as you can imagine, but the "hole" will be more of a funnel and wider than deep. If you just want to do a one shot excavation it's limited to about 6-6.5' as posted above. The deeper you go the smaller the flat bottom area.

Concur with others. With 6' of reach, a BX (for example) could dig a hole 12' around OR 6' deep, but not both. Unless, of course, you consume your life with "sub-holes" to get the machine within reach of the remaining dirt.

A BX backhoe is intended for tree holes, patio excavation, shed foundation excavation, sidewalk excavation, and other things like that. And it does those things EXCEPTIONALLY.

If you're needing something to dig a "real" hole, a "small Kubota" isn't the answer. My neighbor had a pool excavated and a bulldozer actually did a great deal of the work.
