Yep... I actually 'like' the safety interlock starts. I own a IH cub, and ironically ran it out of gas while mowing one day.. after running tot he store to get more gas, I hopped back on, and totally forgot I was in gear and had blades engaged. Hit the start button and was instantly mowing again.. ( strangely.. she had never-ever- started that easy.. and in gear and pto engaged no less!) Glad I was seated and 'ready' to go!

My Kama and Jinma require the clutch pedal to be pushed in before it will start.
After that, once it's running, it's all up to you.

Even on my old 86 Massey you need to have the transmission shifter in the start position to start the tractor. In that position the clutch does not have to be depressed just heat your glow plugs a bit and start. I believe there is a safety interlock to prevent the tractor from starting if you left the PTO engaged when you shut down.

I think you will find that if you get out of the seat while in gear and the shuttle in any position except nutral that it will die. Kubota's work that way.

On the TN's, if you aren't in the seat you can't put it in gear.
if you flip the shuttle to fwd or reverse and you aren't in the seat.
it just dies.

My Iseki, although 15 years old also has the press-clutch to start safety but nothing else.

Now on a manual you have to push quite hard to get it in gear without clutch so i suppose that would not go unnoticed. Accidents do happen nevertheless.

2 weeks ago i was trying to digg out a stump with the FEL. Rear of tractor lifted each time and i got off the tractor to look where i could better position the bucket.

When climbing back on the tractor my hammer-holding strap on my work pants catched the joystick :eek:

FEL engaged and lifted the back of tractor. I ripped off the strap and my back pocket in my reflex to get off the tractor.

My mistake. The joystick side of the tractor is from now on a no-entry zone. Even think of putting a brace to prevent forgetting.

Stay safe, accidents lure.

Yep.. I like to enter my tractors from a single side... One of them has a foot throttle on the right side.. I've almost stomped that trying to climb up the wrong side before.

My Kubota with FEL and cab has a door as big on the right as the one on the left but... it is just an attractive nuisance. Now that I have recently lost about 30 lbs I might be able to in/egress on the right without operating the FEL joystick by accident but I have spent so much time NOT using the right door to avoid the joystick it is just automatic to get in and out on the left like mounting and dismounting a horse. Plus the 'stat pedal is on the right side and there isn't lots of EXTRA space for my size thirteens going that way. Just using the one side is not a hardship.

SoundDude, what tractor had the throttle on the floor? I am not a very experienced tractor guy but I have never seen that before, even on antiques and collectibles.

My tractor has a foot throttle on the floor and a hand throttle on the right hand side of the hood.

Is the foot throttle for use with the PTO while stopped or what? I would be bouncing around way too much to use the foot throttle to good advantage while moving at any reasonable speed. Of course with a hydrostat to operate with my right foot I'd be a busy boy to try to use a foot throttle unless stopped.

Foot throttle is good for loader work and transport use. It lets you adjust the speed of the hydraulics. Driving on the road is a lot nicer too, one hand on shifter, one on wheel, foot on the throttle pedal to match speeds when shifting, the other on the clutch.

The 790 has the seat safety switch but I am still apprehensive about starting it standing beside it. And I love the foot throttle makes me feel better about it not being hydrostatic. If you can't shift on five acres not making money on it I say your spoiled any way

I can't imagine using a tractor with a FEL and shuttleshift without a foot throttle or for that matter, lots of other equipment. You set your hand throttle for your working load and then use the foot throttle for those times when you want a little more speed or maybe power for just a short period of time. I also use mine lots of times when bushhogging and hit a tough spot or wet spot that requires a little more power to get thru it. Handy as a pocket and I suppose if you've never had one, you wont miss it.

I have a bX - a more consumer-oriented tractor than many. It has a fair number of safety switches on it. When I first got it, these could be annoying.

After using it a while, though, the switches do quite a good job of preventing you from doing things you shouldn't be doing it.

Once in a while, while I'm thinking about something else, I get off thetractor without putting it in neutral. And, it starts to shut down. But I shoudn't have been doing that. And the point is, I was thinking about something else, which is when accidents happen.
The delay is great enough (or the seat has to come up far enough), that you can almost always slam it forwards, or sit back down before it stalls.
I think every time a safety switch has ever "caught" me, it should have.

I'm hardly afraid of discinnecting a safey switch, but I really haven't found a need to do so in my usage. So I haven't.

SoundGuy and Gary, I sort of get it now. A throttle pedal on the left side, a little ways left of the clutch would be neat on my hydrostat. Then I too could set the hand throttle for "normal" RPM and use the foot pedal to boost it when and as needed.

Slowzuki, one thing I don't get is why you want a hand on the shifter when roading. Again, please forgive my unlimited ignorance in certain areas but all the tractors I have been around had a SINGLE "road gear" and you didn't shift them like a car. In fact none of the older tractors I have seen let yo shift while moving.

Yep.. and when roading.. if you need to 'dump' the throttle fast to correct for an idiot driver, it's as easy as lifting your foot of fthe pedal, and then hunting frantically for those locked together brakes!
