Just how do you BUY AMERICAN?

This is just us,everybody wants a bargain to begin with, just human nature. For people who have to watch how much money they spend that is,which is most of us.

Unions started out as a good thing, they did good things[think of coal miners].But greed took over, people were being paid 20 bucks an hour in the 70's-80's,for screwing some componate on a car,no skill job,,could train a monkey to do half of them.

Than they got to a point where they didn't care, made junk, the japs saw this and moved in with toyota and datsun, the rest is history in that regard. Can't excape the fact that we are a free country,,we demand our right to buy whatever we want.

You add stuff like that[us],,to the fact that we have people running this country, who constantly seem to make decisions that seem to most to be the most stupid things in the world.

If there was a law passed today that the only things that could be sold here were made in america,we would have little, not because we can't make it all again,,its just under the present situation, few would be able to afford it.Everybody wants that big cake sitting there plus they want to eat it too.

We made our beds over the past 40-50 years, greed, stupidity, get it today payfor it later, etc etc.Now we are not liking it,its catching up,and I'm betting it will do nothing but get worse.

Its a never ending cycle and gets harder every day to try and buy American since not much is 100 % american anymore.

1) American workers want to earn more money and benefits.
2) Employer must raise price of products to meet needs of workers.
3) Gets to a point where employer can't make enough money to stay in business unless he buys foreign materials.
4) Worker and family want to pay least amount for products to save money so don't buy American product.
5) Workers company folds or moves out of country to where they can produce product for less cost putting worker out of job.
6) Worker can't find new job to match standard of living he had with previous job.

Everyone (workers and employers) want to make more money but at what cost. Seems like we are putting ourselves out of business and out of jobs.

I agree totally with George2615
Here in Vermont, a large City Electric Co. is requesting a rate increase. WHY ?
Because so many have gone to energy conservation that the Elec Co profits have taken a large drop.

Here we go lets blame the unions AGAIN!!!!!!!!
When i started my job in 94 i was making $16.85. a far cry from $20 in the 70s and 80s.

And guess what!

It says 'Made in USA (Canada)' but do you know the laws on that?

Deffinition is; 50% must be 'Canadien content' (I presume US is same)
Content is; profit (w/s and retail) taxes etc.
Packaging, shipping etc also counts for 'contenet'.

Ergo you import a $49. gizzmo and retail it for $99.99 and claim it 'Made in Canada (USA)' and are perfectly legal in doing so!

Now that may have changed, but I had gov't reps actually rate a product we imported in that way, and they provided the decals stating content to boot!

We had a local reporter that attempted to live an entire year buying only Canadian products!
Well it was a disaster, the foods alone were quite a revelation as were electrical and electronic devices.
Where we have local produce in abundance, the big boxes prefer importing as they claim the need for common supplier and on demand volume.
As to shoes one would have no choice but to go barefoot or have one of a kind artisan crafted ones made.
Some textiles were home grown but oddly often printing or other processes were offshore and in general unless hand made and artisan spun you could not avoid foreign content.
Sure, on some comodities transportation is such a major portion of the total cost of the goods that they can claim 'content'.
Maybe that is why the govt's allow fuels to soar, to increase the content ratios which in turn would influence the 'balance of trade'.

One needs to understand that products are being made by prison labor for like twenty five cents a day for free for a day.

They not only CAD designed my product made a mold and produce 500 units for 5K.

I have a conscience. Theres no way i could have my product made by forced labour. It goes against everything i stand for.

And your new product. What do you think happened to those CAD drawings? What's it going to do to your business when you see a clone of your product on the shelves for a quarter the cost? You dont have to look any further than the rash of Honda small engine clones that have appeared. China has no respect for patents or IP laws.Or Honda's legal team for that matter.

There's the biggest problem to me. Our super-size wastefull governments just taking our tax revenues and throwing them into an abyss.

Funny watching our gov't getting ready to prosecute Bernie Madoff for running a 50 million dollar "ponzi scheme" when our whole stinkin gov't has been running a multi-trillion dollar "ponzi scheme" for the last 50 years.

You can't blame the American worker or the union's for this one. Blame the American consumer. There was a day when we looked for things of the best quality. Now we only look at statistics. This thing can do as much as that thing and only costs half as much. In days gone by "Made in USA" for a catalog item was an indication of quality. Now many do not care about quality anymore. Only how much it costs. So we have to search for quality. We can't find it made in USA because many America consumers don't care about quality anymore. They just want a bargain.

And even if you were willing to pay more for an American made or European made quality item, they're no longer available because they've gone offshore, or gone under.

Perfect example: Last week I went looking for quality work boots. I wanted really good ones this time so I went to a Red Wing store. I found that Red Wing does still make a few dozen types in the USA (and they were a good 25% more expensive), but their "Worx" line are all made in China to keep prices low. The store owner's feeling was that in a few more years, most, if not all the Red Wing shoes will be made in China.
