Well, the first cold snap and the 2615 wont start! Acts like a dead battery, which it shouldnt be, I just ran the thing three days ago for at least 2 hrs. I have also noticed that when its cold out, the hydraulic pump makes a rattling noise....Whats up with that...?
Any sugestions?

To me acts "like a dead battery" means it won't crank, or cranks slow. Is that what you mean? Been in auto repair for many years, we get busy when the temperatures are extreme.

"cold...hydraulic pump rattling noise" this might just be a component complaining because it needs to be warmer to operate properly.

BTW where are you? ie: northeast? west?

North Central PA...Yes the rattling noise is when its cold, and yes it cranks slow. I just dont get it though...the battery was fine just a couple days ago, maybe the life span is three years on it...?

I have a 2615 and changed out my battery the first winter with the biggest cold cranking battery walmart sold because it seemed to turn over too slow in the coldest temps. The battery has been in my wife's car and works great even in the winter, but I think the power requirements of her civic are less than my 2615. With this recent cold snap, it takes some cranking to get the tractor running, but the bigger battery really helps get it going.

I'm in upstate NY in the snow belt. I had to replace my 2615's battery within 3 years. Cold winters take their toll on them. I bought the largest CCA battery that would fit in the box to replace the stocker. It also helps to have a lower hose heater (which I have on mine) or a block heater. I don't have a rattling in my hyd. pump just a cold weather whine. By the way, mine is an 04 and I've had to replace the glow plugs too. A friend of mine has an 06 and he changed out his battery a month ago when we did his 200 hour service.

"cold...hydraulic pump rattling noise"
= Summer hydraulic oil, should be lighter wt is my guess.
Check your ownerès manual for suggested weights.

Others have related to battery issues.

How on earth can you even hear a pump noise over the cold engine diesel clatter? Get the big Walmart battery. I junked the original before the first Winter. I knew that factory battery was a loser the first time I looked in there. Do youself a favor and get one with the provision for an external vent tube. Your radiator will thank you in a few years. My Walmart is going on 4 years and still spins it fine. You probably have at least one dead
Glow plug as well. Mitsu's seem to snack on those with some regularity.

LOL,,,I know its hard but yes you can hear it...sound like its coming fom the left rear side of the engine...It whines and if you drive the tractor, it will rattle. It will stop though when you cycle the front end loader. Once it warms up, its fine, makes zero noise.
I will get a battery today, anyone have the battery number from walmart? I appreciate all the feed back on this.

It takes a while for hydraulic oil to catch up to temp with the rest. Once I get started I do some light manuvering of the loader and 3 point. The more you use it the warmer it gets. I would take it easy on the hydraulics while they are warming up since I am sure the pump is overworked when fluid is cold.

As for cold starting. Sometimes batteries don't work well in the cold. You can turn the glow plugs on and off a few times. They say to turn lights on or something like that a few minutes before you start to "wake up" the battery. This gets the battery internals moving around and warms it up so to speak. Then it has a better chance of being able to do the heavy starting. I had to jump my 6500 a week or so ago since it was cold and had not run in a while. Doesn't necessarily mean your battery is dead.

A trickle charger would help too if it is sitting for a bit.

What are you guys using to keep your fuel from gelling? Have you ever used that diesel 911...? The only thing I could find was the diesel 911 for gelled fuel and stp ejector cleaner with anti0- gel properties...will this work good enough to keep the fuel from turning to paste...?

Sorry fellas, I found some answers in the fuel forum....Power service additive was reccomended. I tell ya, this is the second time my fuel has gelled, both times it was supposed to be treated and bought from sheetz! I get sick of paying the price for treated diesel and still having the problems. I think its time to start using some kero diesel mix for the cold months.

I've had my 2615 for 3 or 4 winters and even during the last really cold blast with it parked in probably the coldest place on my property (in front of my garage) it would always start reliably (not fast but it would start). I'm still on the original battery.

Here's what I do every winter:

1. I use Power Service Diesel fuel additive (the white bottle) starting in the fall and throughout the winter. I get it at Walmart or NAPA in my area. TSC may carry it. Make sure your fuel bowl has no water in it in the fall. If there is any water or cloudiness on the cold days then you need to clean out the bowl and put in a new filter. I've found Power Service will help with any water in the fuel lines.

2. Cycle the glow plugs three times before turning over the engine.

3. Let it run and warm up thoroughly. Then cycle the loader and 3pt lift repeatedly to purge the cold fluid.

4. Always park the loader curled up so the cylinders are fully retracted as much as possible.

I usually have to chip ice of the tractor while it is warming up and sweep snow off of everything. I was breaking ice off the grill and hood this last time just to keep it from getting too thick.

Also, if it's really cold I'll make sure I heat it up and run it at least once a day just to keep it "ready". That's why it's parked in front of my garage. I can fire it up and exercise the tractor after I exercise the dogs (they don't work so great in the cold weather anymore either).

I keep mine on a Battery Tender Plus. Fires up every time and it is in an insulated garage. Of course it's only a year old. I'm a true believer in tenders. Motocycle, ATV's, etc. Many of my friends have had to replace their Harley batteries (HD thinks they are made out of gold) and mine is still running strong. Don't do what I did tho and forget to unplug it and run over it with the front wheel. The outside body is a little dinged up....but it still works...ha

My significant other has a BMW and that dam thing will go dead over a long weekend if it's not tendered (when it's cold). It has so many electronics scanning everything all weekend it drain the battery. BMW's solution was to 'tender'. BMW will sell you a battery tender with a BMW logo for 80.00. Deltron makes it for BMW (and HD). I just bought the cigarette lighter adapter for a 49.00 tender without the logo and it works fine.

My Ford Exploder was dead this morning from just leaving the radar detector on. Doesn't take much to drain a battery when it's cold outside. Cold cranking amps are a lot lower when it's cold.

Well in case anyone is wondering....I got the trusty Mahindra running again. I got fed up with the battery and bought the biggest one I could find that fits the battery pan. Fired right up, then quit...as I stated in the previous post, gelled diesel! Well got that all taken care of and the thing never missed a beat! Got about 24" of snow removed from my driveway, and the two neighbors driveways. Needless to say I am still impressed with the machine. This is my third winter with it and it still runs as good as it did the day I bought it.

Yeah I use the white power service jug. I add more than it specifies just to make sure. It is supposed to be safe year round, although it looks like they want you to use the gray stuff during the warm months. Since it is a cetane booster it also gets you more power out of your diesel and cleans the injectors.

Besides using the Power Service Diesel fuel additive try and made sure you buy your fuel from possibly a place that has a high turn over of fuel. I get all my fuel from a BP truck stop and was able to start my tractor when we hit -29 a couple weeks ago and I have it parked in a lean to.

Well just what battery did you get? I went out yesterday and started by 3 1/2 year old 2615. I ran it for about ten minutes, shut it off, started up, ran another few minutes, shut down to adjust implement position, started up, ran for a few minutes, shut down, and now it won't start.

The battery cells will float 1 - 2 balls. After charging for 18 hrs. 2 - 3 balls float. I don't know why it would start all those times, and then not start. I doubt my alternator is bad. Even if I get more of a recharge, I think I will have to replace, and soon.

With all those short starts and stops you might have drained it down a bit. I've also found that for some reason connections can be picky. Not on my tractor but on vehicles sometimes they just like the terminals cleaned up and some attention I guess. :)
