Rotary Cutter Bush Hog batwing 2615 legend w/ JD 2355

I might have bought too big of batwing mower... Anyone have experience with the Bush Hog 2615 Legend, mine has michelin aircraft tires, chains and is heavy. I thought my John Deere 2355 FWA Cab tractor w/ loader could handle it now I have several people telling me that the mower might be too big for my 55-60hp tractor? The people telling me it is too big want to buy it also. I did hook it up, engaged it with the tractor at about 1500 rpm and it ran like a sewing machine, ran it up to speed and it sounds good. It is used but never mowed more than 100 acres or so and I could sell it and make some money but with my 7 footer this thing looks attractive for topping fields. I don't plan on getting into heavy brush or anything and have fairly flat land. Any thoughts on this, I am new to the forum so my apologies if this has been covered. I realize now the mfg. recommends a 60hp tractor minimum but my local JD dealer said since the tractor is older and heavier it should be ok but wouldn't recommend it on newer 5400 series tractors.

You have 56 pto and 67 engine hp. I think you will be ok. You are probably at the lower end. May have to go slow in the heavy stuff. Your tractor has MFWD and traction will be ok even if a little muddy. Your tractor is heavy enough to handle the mower weight. Most 15' batwing mowers are between 5000 and 5500 lbs and pull easy. About 1/3 of that wt is on the drawbar. I use a 105 pto, Case-IH 125 and don't even know the mower is there most of the time. I have gone over a few 4"+ cedar trees and doesn't really affect the tractor. If I bottom out in the dirt, then it can be noticed by the tractor unless I raise it quickly.

That's too much mower for a tractor that size unless ALL you're doing is topping grass in a well kept pasture. I have three 2615's and two more on order. (I operate a mowing business where we mow highway right-of-ways) They're hooked to 85hp and 95hp tractors. I've had them into weeds where the 85hp tractors were laboring. I have a Deere 2440, which is roughly the same size tractor as yours. (61hp pto) and have tried using a 15'er behind it ONCE. The tractor let me know real quick it didn't care for all that mower behind it. (started to over-heat in less than 30 minutes in 10" tall fescue grass)

I pull one of the 2615's with a 6430 Deere. It handles the 15'er like it's not even back there.

Hmmm. Well now I am now cautiously optimistic... I guess the only way to know is wait till the grass grows and find out. Thanks for your opinion, I love the JD2355 and hate to go back to the TL100 NH. The NH was too big to get around.

Be afraid of minimum hp ratings on any mower. They are always too low.

I have to agree with FWJ.

I pull a JD 1517 15' batwing with my NH 7610s.. it's a good match.. low 90's eng, high 80's pto... Still.. lush tall grass makes the governor on the tractor kick in and up the smoke...

I pull a 10' mower with my ford 5000 and it is 70/67. 10' mows nice.. no strain.

I know a guy that has a 5000 and pulls a 15' with it.. and all he can really do is clip blacktops on clean pasture. Tall stemmy weeds aren't too bad.. but lush growth makes him crawl in 1st or 2nd gear.. which is horribly slow.. vs being able to run in something like 5th gear ( ford 8spd.. in both the 5000/7610s ) witht he correct sized mower.

Bush Hog's doors are closed at the moment. May want to consider another company. Don't know if they will reopen or who will own them.
