My brother called me last night.. he has a chevy 2500.. he parked it on a job last night he was working on.. went to leave last night.. turns key.. nada. Has lamps and dash lamps, had starter a couple times.. then nothing.. no starter even.. not like dead battery.. just won't engage anymore. never even tried to catch the couple times the starter kicked.

any ideas where to look? ignition switch / start switch problems... I don't know how the injector pump on that vehicle is handled but assume the computer has it's hands in there somewhere..

Ok.. more info.

Looks to be a fuel problem. Parts dealer says there is a lift pump in the tank.. but manufacturer says it's a gear charge pump on the back of the injector pump.. ( manufacturer was right )..

In any case... charge pump died.. it's getting a new one installed right now.

battery issue was unrelated.. and just happend to be a weak battery that died when it got a lil cold here in florida.

thanks for the ideas.

How many miles on it?? I am guessing this is a Duramax Diesel. I call the small pump on the back of the gear driven high pressure pump a lift pump. The injector pump is really only a pump that makes the fuel be under high pressure, like up to 20,000 psi. I have not heard of the lift pump going bad but anything is possible. I would make double sure the rubber hoses going to the fuel filter and then to the lift pump itself are free of cracks. The early Duramax engines had injector problems some kind of bad. Would allow diesel to get into the crankcase so bad the it would start coming out of the breather tube on the engine. I guess it gave the inside of the engine a real good cleaning while you drove down the road with crankcase full of diesel/oil mix.

If it is a 6.5 turbo diesel it might be the PMD (pump mounted driver) that mounts on the side of the injection pump. If this is what they are changing, check and see if they mounted it back on the pump or mounted it on a heat sink on the intake. They had a lot of issues with heat affecting these and someone finally came up with the heat sink idea and it works good.

Hooked, Yes.. I do believe that is what it is .. and now that you mention it.. this truck lost one a couple years back too!

Is it the 6.5 or the duramax. I see that maybe the 2001 could be either.

I took it for granted we were talking about a duramax.. A 6.5 has a lift pump mounted in the fuel line about the location a fuel filter would be under the truck driver's side. Not hard at all to change. Will usually make the truck hard to start if you can get it started.

If the lift pump failed, I would suspect he took on a load of fuel with water in it at some point.

Are you shure about that. I have been under my 3500HD for the last 2 days changing the trans. and havent seen one. I do know where the blank filter is along the frame and there in no pump there. I will look in the morning when I finish the trans.

Hooked - curious about your tranny fix? Allison give up the shift? Thanks.

What are you calling a blank filter?? The inline lift fuel pump looks like a regular inline filter on a gas burner,, but on the 6.5 diesel there should be 2 wires coming out of the thing that looks like a filter. A fuel filter for a gas burner will go into the spot where the lift pump is. The treads on the fuel lines and the distance between the fuel lines on a 6.5 diesel powered truck, are the same for a gas burner fuel filter, meaning you can very easily think you are looking at a filter when in fact it is a lift pump..

Hooked do you have a 6.5 liter or the 6.6 duramax?? Seen the other post about allison transmission. As far as I know the trans behind the 6.5 is a 4L80E, where as the 6.6 has the Allison trans behind it..

Soundguy keep us up on the fix for the problem.

I don't know if this is a newer silverado or not. But the newer ones with the built in security will at times lose their minds. The result is bright lights, loud radio, PW working just fine ---- but turn the key and nothing spins under the hood.

Morning Soundguy,

On some of the Chev's the lift pump is under the driver on the inside of the frame, this lift pump is controlled by the oil pressure switch for safety. It is a know problem that the oil pressure switch has to be changed on some of these. The truck will run without the lift pump but if it looses prime for any reason it won't run. You can jump the pump to test this. Don't know if this will help but hope it does.

I had a 94 Suburban with a 6.5 turbo, so I don't know how much this will help you.

So far they have repalced the charge pump, and while it was in they also found one bad injector... so they are changing that as well.

AKfish, I have the 4l80E behind the 6.5. The 6.5 harmonic balancer took a crap (common problem) and before I found it, it had taken out the torque converter. It would kick out of overdrive after driving about 5 miles. Some how the computer monitors engine rpm verses input shaft and if it detects to much slippage it puts the trans into default.
