SteelDust , i'm just wondering , what do you guy's do for rainwater guttering ? It looks like it would be a problem as the snow would try and tear the gutters off .

Also , what did you use to coat the timber with ? Oil , stain , etc ?

I'm going to have to look into Snow-Stops... My Thurston County home is near you SteelDust and I just got word a large slab of snow slid off the second story roof onto the wood deck below...

To early to tell if any damaged occurred... thankfully no one was out on the deck or it would have been very serious.

When I was a kid my parents were part-owners of a cabin at Lake Tahoe. The cabin was an A-frame with a shingled roof, and a deck that wrapped around from the flat side to the sloped slide. One year a snow slide off the roof completely demolished the deck on the sloped side. In another example of great design, this cabin had a flat-roofed extension off the other sloped side. It was up high enough that slides off the slope were never a problem, BUT we often had to shovel the snow off the flat roof after a major storm.

Around here we just use typical guttering. To be honest, this is the most snow that we've had here in as long as anyone that I've talked to can remember. I do plan on putting gutters on the building, I just haven't gotten around to it yet. You are correct in your assumption though, I have heard a few stories of gutters being torn from the roof by snow sliding off. The roof on my house is asphalt singles and 4/12 pitch, so far the snow has not slid off and is just gradually melting, thus my gutters are still intact. I'm sure there is a gutter solution for high snow fall areas, but having not lived in one since I was a small kid, I don't know what they are.

The wood treatment is a stain. It's Behr Premium, transparent, natural cedar tone. Available at Home Depot here in the US. I'm hoping it holds up well, it came with a 6 year warranty in siding applications, which was the longest that I could find. I wanted something that had a good UV inhibitor in it, even though the sun in this area isn't all that intense even at the peak of summer.

Yes, it certainly is. That's twice that has happened during the course of me posting this thread. My property and family is safe, we're approx 400 feet above the flood plain. I'm currently stranded at work, holding down the fort here, which is also on high ground. The only problem being every road between work and my house is under quite a bit of water. Hopefully, I'll get home Sat morning sometime, I've been here since Wed afternoon.

Talked with neighbors that have lived in their home 50 years and they said this has already been a year for the record books... they were snowed in more than a week and now they're hoping not to be washed away...

The Olympian newspaper has some amazing pictures... I5 is closed again... don't ever remember that happening but once before.

Made my way home from work this morning. From the looks of it, things were not nearly as bad as last year in this area. I'm not quite sure why they closed I-5 so soon and kept it closed so long this time. From what I can recall I-5 was closed in 90, 96, 07, and now 09.

Looks like this area dodged a bullet, most of the heavy rain fell further north in the Seattle Tacoma area. Lots of areas flooded there that have never seen flooding.

Minor river flooding is, for the most part, an annual occurrence. Mostly just pasture flooding in those cases. But, we've just been particularly unlucky here in the last two years.

Last years flood put areas that weren't even designated by FEMA as 500 year flood zones under 8 feet of water. But, I think that was truly a unique event, some areas of the hills southwest of here saw 20" of rain in 36 hours, that fell on 12-18" of snow.

This years event was just short of a 100 year flood, the heaviest rain moved north of here. Most homes and business were therefore spared major damage. The last big flood before these was in 1996, that was considered a 100 year flood.





To keep this somewhat on topic, the Porter Cable router I ordered to fix a minor miscalculation I made on the stall fronts showed up on Friday. The edge guide and bit set should be here Monday. Hopefully by next Sunday I'll have some progress pictures up.

Just a quick update. Finally finished the stall fronts and put a coat of sealer on the "presentation" side. The cedar faced material on the doors looks great, still need to trim out the very top of the door. I'm going to seal all the stall wood before the animals are let in. Also have to get flashing up on all the surfaces they could crib on.

I just used 3/4" conduit installed into the precut groove of the material, with spacers in between to fill the rest of the groove. Yes, they might someday bend a section of conduit, but it's easily replaced and dirt cheap. Prefabbed stall fronts are ridiculous in price and I couldn't find them locally, meaning I'd have a huge shipping bill on top of that.
