You guys crack me up. I'm not sure if your serious or not. :)Can't see your faces:).

About this right to "conceal". I think generally it is a bad idea to carry a weapon in a manner that allows the general public to see it if the one carrying is not in law enforcement. The reason is not only will it scare people, but it will also cause calls to the police department and overburden the department and our 911 system with calls. I once read that only those who want to scare the weak or innocent wear their guns on their hips in "plain view". Think about those that are willing and ready to commit a crime. Who are they gonna shoot first. I learned to attack the biggest threat first. The guy behind me. Same with them. The one carrying in plain view is the one shot first. Then the weapon is getting used by the criminal. I hate having to conceal. It would be much easier to wear my gun on my hip. But concealing keeps me safer (by not exposing my weopon), and the public at ease (by not seeing it). I have a lot of friends that carry concealed. They too have a lot of friends that carry. What if none of them concealed. Don't get me wrong. Like I said, I don't like concealing but think it's better if I do. I don't conceal when I'm in the woods or on a back country road, but in town or at work I do.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I agree with you. However, some gun owners will disagree.

Hogwash. Some states do allow open carry laws. In NC, you need to "qualify" for a CC permit. You can also not need a CC permit and wear the sidearm on your side in plain view.

I learned to attack the biggest threat first

One reason why I agree with you about "open carry".

The one carrying in plain view is the one shot first

One argument would be that a man wanting to commit a crime with a gun would not do so if he saw someone else carrying a sidearm.

I hate having to conceal. It would be much easier to wear my gun on my hip. But concealing keeps me safer (by not exposing my weopon), and the public at ease (by not seeing it).

I have no issue with CC. Proper holster and clothing. For myself, it keeps me safer because no one knows I am armed, and in "my thinking" I'm not a "first strike target" because I just look like a normal guy:D

We want to avoid politics as much as possible

Better or worse, guns are a political topic, but I figure since the majority of people who live in the "country" and own tractors, also own firearms (as a way of life), it's permitted here (with all due respect).

I agree, absolutely, the element of surprise can overcome overwhelming odds and could be the decisive factor.

I don't carry that much, but wouldn't want to carry exposed unless in the woods or on a farm.

Hogwash. Some states do allow open carry laws.
New Hampshire is one.
I don't believe Vermont requires a permit for concealed carry. perhaps one of our VT members will give some input.

Sigarms, I'm not talking about being 'allowed' to carry open. In VA you don't need a permit at all to 'carry'. Just to conceal. I'm talking about what open carrying makes the general public think. How safe do they feel when everyone around them is carrying guns open.

I agree that many criminals would be deterred if they see someone carrying. However the bold ones that are desperate shoot he who is armed first. Without warning. Leaving that person no chance whatsoever.

And yes. This is a political topic. Unavoidably so:D.

I have to agree with you Matt. The first rule of battle is know your enemy. That's why I wear shirts out in public that hide what little build I do have. ;)

Here's the thing: Most of the creeps who are shooting people up around here, I'm pretty sure they don't worry about permits. I don't know why you'd be concerned about it at all, unless you're 1)planning on doing something stupid, or 2) more concerned about the law than you are about protecting yourself and your family. Government permits are just another form of control and monitoring, and I doubt the founding fathers would have imagined or believed such a system would ever exist.

I agree with you. However, it could be argued if it really matters what the general public think if it takes the rights of others away.

I've noticed from personal experience that it's usually people not familiar with firearms who are "afraid" of them.

For myself, it's a question of common sense. I don't go around riding with a couple of the "black rifles" hanging up in the gun rack in the truck when I go into downtown Charlotte:D

I doubt the founding fathers would have imagined or believed such a system would ever exist.

Perhaps it could be argued that the founding fathers could never of imagined or believed that one gun could kill so many people in such a short period of time?

Government permits are just another form of control and monitoring

Don't disagree with you. Usually goverment or state agencies become a moster of their own with people trying to protect their jobs instead of doing the "right thing". Perhaps, however it could be argued that permits are used to verify those in ownership of them (permits) have met certain requirements or guidelines that should insure the safety of others?

Here's the thing: Most of the creeps who are shooting people up around here, I'm pretty sure they don't worry about permits

Agreed. However it could be argued that if the gun laws already on the books were STRICTLY enforced, gun related deaths by acts of crime would decrease.

Two words: Denny Crane

Funny clip, but just goes to show you how T.V missleads the public on subjects they know nothing about. How many here carrying a gun, needing to shoot it to protects one life, would shoot a "bad guy" in the foot or knee cap?

Perhaps it could be argued that if we had madatory training on firearms for both children and adults, people wouldn't be afraid of what guns really are, a tool. Then again, could make for some interesting headlines with the "inner city" schools.
