Sorry for the off-topic, but I need your thoughts/suggestions on metal carports. Is there a company/website to order a kit from? Anyone buy a kit from Lowes/Home Depot? I want one about 22x22 feet. What ball park price will I be paying? Thanks for your help. I need to cover my Kubota and other goodies I have for it.

Yep, I'll have to disagree with SnowRidge to some extent. I can understand his opinion, and he may be right, depending on what else is in the neighborhood. But when we lived temporarily for a couple of years in a mobile home park, and didn't know for sure how long we'd be there, I bought a 20' x 20' from T-N-T Carports. Later, a daughter bought an 18' x 20' from the same people. Our only choices were that type of carport or leave the vehicles sitting out in the Texas sun and heat in the summer and rain at times, which makes it a bit uncomfortable. Many others in that mobile home park had the same type of carports.

Of course it's been a few years since we bought those carports, so I don't know what current prices would be. And at that time, they did not sell them as kits; a 2 or 3 man crew would show up and install it in about 2 hours. So you could call them and ask about a price. There may be other companies that might have a better deal, but it's a place to start.

I'm about to have an 18x21 metal carport installed at my parents home, which is where I keep my tractor at. CarolinaCarportsinc.com quoted me a price of $695 for the standard 18x21 with 5ft sides. I am getting the 8ft sides for another $150, plus am enclosing one side for an extra $175. This brought it to about $1176 including taxes and 4ft bracing needed when you go above 7ft in height. This is 14ga sheetmetal mind you, not the preferred 12ga which really runs the cost up. I'm off work the week of Christmas and the week of New Year's Day so I'm hoping to get them lined up to install it one of those days so I can be there to watch it. I do have a minor bit of prep work to do to level up one side just a bit. My plan is to eventually pour a pad next to it and then literally move the carport on top of the pad and anchor it down.

Does that sound feasible, if I get enough friends and offer them enough beer to come help me move it??? :) Assuming I get it to that point, then I plan to have the same people come back and fully enclose it with two garage doors.

For now, the carport will protect my JD 790 from the rain and sun but not the cold and heat, but that's better than the tarp it's mostly covered up with now. Once they get it up, I will try and post a few pic's if anyone wants to see it. It's gonna be a dark gray to match the privacy fence it will be sitting next to. We just had 3 plus inches of rain this weekend so I can't wait to get this thing put up!! This is my Christmas present to me!

I looked as some of the nicer metal carport, this was about the same price, maybe a bit less, but a lot more labor. It was a lot more that the simple metal one you see so much of. <$2500 in materials (not inlcuding the retaining wall and concrete. But I like a lot better. (26 x 26)

I like it!!!

Do you plan on leaving the wood natural?

Yes, the posts, laminated beams, bracing and rafters are all pressure treated, I even used 5/4 decking for the facia. The only thing not PT is the OSB decking.

I just finished it last week. After it weathers a bit, it will match the back deck on the house and a wood shed on the other side.

Very nice looking! But what's the green and yellow thing hiding in the shadows next to the saw horses? :)

While we were in the mobile home park, an elderly couple with a good sized single wide mobile home had it moved from one lot in the park to another lot (I have no idea why). But they had one of the metal carports (20' x 20' or 20' x 21') and they simply raised it enough to put casters under the 4 corners, then pushed and pulled it to the new location which was about 150 yards uphill, but on an asphalt street within the park.

:) Thanks! THAT green and yellow thing it the wonderful little machine that removed the embankment that was there, dug up and removed the stumps, back filled the retaining wall, graded the whole thing flat, set the beams and hauled the materials!

I actually thought that the metal carport/garages looked OK. Questioned their strength up here in snow country...Then I saw the real deal made out of wood. It just looks better to my eye, in that setting.
My house is board and batten, in the middle of the woods. If the house had aluminium or vinyl siding, then maybe the metal shed would look OK beside it.
I'm even thinking of shedding my steel roof and replacing with brown/green shingles now....;-)

Color selection makes a difference in metal buildings. Just having a contrasting color of corners and trim can improve the appearance.

I really like the durablity of metal roofs, myself.

And, metal roofs are a plus if you get heavy snow. The snow slides off, and you don't have to worry about shoveling like on a shingled one. You have to rethink where you put your chimney and doors, because the snow will wipe off anything not up by the peak, and a door will be useless if under where the snow slides to. But still, a big plus if you get lots of snow, like I do.

We put a metal roof on our house several years ago and (except for the cost) like it a lot. We have a chimney well down the slope and haven't had any problems. The way the snow slides off doesn't present any threats to ours. In our case, it's not like snow builds up a powerful head of steam and then slams into the bricks.

However, we had a second floor deck that gave up the ghost after a few too many avalanches of heavy, wet, snow. And I have to shovel LOTS of snow that fell in front of our main entrance.

What is snow? :p

You might consider a metal barn VS the car port. It does cost a bit more but it is secure and looks a lot better.
Best,
Ed
