But things have to be vented.
You can't just seal everything up air tight .

Then what's your theory?

I think they did away with the vents because they leak fumes or fuel if they break off or the operator doesn't put the cap on.

Maybe the fuel goes stale slower as well? I think I'd vote for a rubber gasket on the existing system before I'd eliminate the vent though.

my guess is vents were done away with because of the hype static electricity started fires has gotten recently.

I like the idea of the Northern Tool pump, but it's more difficult to remove the battery cover to get access to the battery and to clip the battery clips on the terminals than it's worth.

What would be a great improvement would be a 2 pin flat plug prewired on my batteries into my battery box that would plug into a 2 pin flat connector on the pump. THAT would be the ticket.

Most of my tractors i have added a cig-lighter/12v power outlet to them.. usually under the hood near the battery... that way i can hook up things like inverters.. tire pumps.. etc.

Yep, I did it on my tractors, too. Really comes in handy. My Case came with 2 of them from the factory, but they're in the cab in a bad spot for the pump. I think i'll wire a 2 pin flat from the battery box or some kind of weatherproof 12V socket. Trouble is, i can't find any that are truly weatherprrof & rugged.

Have you found one with a good sealing rubber cap?

I've seen ones with caps.. but don't trust them.. so i always tuck mine up under the hood..

I think they moved the vent into the spout. When you are filling the tank the fuel level rises to the spout and stops the vent which stops the flow of fuel so no fuel is spilled in theory.

I too am not pleased with the time it takes to pour 5 gal from a new plastic jerry can. I recently ran my 300 gal overhead tank empty (hadn't been sticking it and have no sight glass) without warning. I bought a couple 5ers of diesel on the weekend as I couldn't get fuel delivery till Monday morning. I used one old 5er and one new one. Man, the new one took FOREVER. I am so happy I have an overhead tank for normal ops.

Regarding the color of the cans. Isn't it cheaper to buy the cheapest color and use some plastic spray paint to indicate their intended contents. HF sells 1000 tie wraps for a few bucks and some are red, some blue, some yellow... Put a tie wrap on the handle of whatever colored can and pretend the can is the color of the little plastic tie wrap. This is even easier and cheaper than plastic spray paint.

Siphon hoses are sometimes referred to as Oklahoma credit cards. I used to carry an automotive fuel pump with plastic hose on both ends (I called it an electric credit card) to transfer fuel. I suppose it was intended for gasoline but it sure pumped a lot of diesel for me. Not as fast as I wished but it got it done. I put long power leads on it with large (sized to fit battery terminals) alligator clips on the wires. That power connection was a sure thing. Cig lighter would have been more convenient if I could have been assured I would never need to make a transfer when no cig outlet was available. I don't recall the transfer rate but I did select the pump for being the highest volume automotive application I could find at the time (bought it at a truck parts place.)

Try Marine supply. I mounted one on my dash, and it has been sealed fine.

I (under attack of frustration) just bought 12 V fuel transfer pump in local farm supply. Then I installed a 4 contact trailer receptacle on the back of the tractor. One contact is 12 V common connected to minus terminal on the battery, one contact is connected to plus 12 V on the battery in series with 20A automatic breaker and one contact is connected also to the breaker but with a switch in series. That one is used for control of a three point sprayer. Since the transfer pump has its own switch it has a plug wired to direct 12 V. The sprayer has a plug wired to switched 12 V. Now I need to acquire about 50 gallon tank but so far couldn't find one for reasonable amount of money.

*You don't need to pay $100 or more for a 50 gallon tank that won't work anyway because it don't have the right openings to use a pump on.
I paid 12 bucks for this 30 gallon one.
I recently bought 2 55 gallon ones for 12 dollars a piece.
A couple of months before that I bought a 55 gallon one for $17.oo.

Prices in south central Oklahoma are lower for drums. I pay from free to about $10 for 50 gal polly drums or steel. I have at least a dozen in reserve.

Since this is around post # 97, can we change the title? Its no longer a "quick" 5 gallon fuel container rant!

I have several of the old "Fire Proof" metal gas cans with the spring loaded lid over the spout. I just painted a couple of them yellow and they work well.
