I have a 256 hay rake. The gear box went out, bearing and seal. I don't think any gears are broke, but it slips.
Tried to find a used gear box with no success.
I am wondering if it can be repaired.
or would I be better off looking for another used rake at an auction?
any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks

All the parts for that gearbox can be had from New Holland. They are really not difficult to rebuild with common tools and decent ability. If bearings and seals are all it needs, the parts to fix it are probably worth much less than the rake is even without any gearbox at all.

What he said!

I've got a NH256. It's been mine since the early '70's. I've rebuilt the gearbox. IIRC, the parts I needed were under $250 (about 3 years ago) A good 256 NH Roll-A-Bar rake will bag $1200 to $2000 at auctions here, usually closer to $1800/$2000.

The pinion shaft you're after is the last thing out of the box. Take the back cover off, remove the cotter pin and castle nut from the yoke shaft. Once the yoke shaft starts out of the box, the bevel gear on it will come out. Then remove the castle nut from the pinion shaft and drive it out the back.
