Toro SS5000 with Kohler
Model Year: 2014
This is my first ZTR. I have about 2.75 acres, the front is flat with a lot of trees and the back has several trees and slopes off to a bluff drop of 100 ft. or more. The worst slope is 17 degrees in one small spot but 1/2 of it is 5-8 degrees. After adjusting the seat full forward and lowering the arms, I started in the front yard to get used to it, then did the back. It took about 1/2 the time even in low range because I never got stuck. My Ariens 54" yard tractor got stuck at least 3-4 times doing the back and would not climb the back yard straight up, but this one has no problems. I did not experience any problems doing the bluff line (I have railroad ties lining the line) or climbing the hill or turning on the hill, but going down it doesn't turn well at all. This is in the manual, so one has to make sure all turns are up hill. Right now the wife is mowing the front yard just a little past idle but is learning fast. So far I have not had it out of the low range which is great, no worries about going too fast and loosing control until you learn to mow with it. The build is very tight and after letting out tire air until 11 lbs., it rides much smoother on my rough yard than the Ariens. I ordered the foot lift, but I think I will send it back as I just don't need it. The cut is also much better than the Ariens. Loosing 4" from 54 to 50 doesn't hurt as now the front wheels are in line with the deck edge, I bump into trees much less with the deck. I also ordered an hour meter for less than $10 off Amazon w/free shipping and mounted it next to the switch. I paid $2,675 shipped, no tax. The back is about 1/2. I also have a side yard on one side. I will post an update when I get into high gear and have some more hours on it.
Pros: Comfort, less mowing time.
Cons: None yet.
