New (Old) Lawn Mower
Model Year: 1981
Decided to buy an old lawnmower because upon review, the new mowers are not as good as the old ones. I needed a push mower with a good engine, non-corrosive deck (my last mower failure was because of deck corrosion), very maneuverable, light and reliable. Could not find a new one that fit the bill in Canada (ironically, in the U.K. [I grew up in the U.K.], Honda did have exactly what I was looking for) so plumped for an older Lawn Boy. Bought a well used 21" 7229 that started and ran when I purchased it and proceeded as follows: - Bought a new air filter cover, no problem, found the filters in canadian tire. - Tested compression; 100psi when cold. - The under deck exhaust was in horrid condition when I removed it. But scraped the inside out and then put it on a camper stove outside until the smoke had stopped coming off the housing and the thing was clean. Put it all back. - Sharpened the blade. The mower starts 2nd pull and mows fine, except: not consistent tone when cutting, stumbles from time to time. I am thinking there is a problem with the carb. I am thinking there is too much fuel getting in (often a small puddle of fluid under the air filter when the mower sits for a day or two). That is my next task---carburetor removal and check for function. I hope it is something simple like the float is out of adjustment or needs a new float. We will see.
Pros: Light, reliable, maneuverable, classic, uncomplicated.
Cons: Maximum cut height not high enough.
