Hard to Keep it Running at Peak Performance
Model Year: 1992
I purchased the LawnBoy 680541 from a Dealer as used. He assured me it was in top condition and that he had serviced it. I used it for a few months, and it started running at low power and eventually quit. Back to dealer. Used it for rest of summer. Next summer, it quit after a few months. Back to dealer. Two more months and it quit. All with low power issues before quitting. I finally learned how to service it. Even though I was using LawnBoy ashless oil mixed properly int he right ratio, you will get exhaust port carbon and muffler issues. I have to clean every few months of heavy use. The carb is easily temperamental and the fuel line screen clogs easily. The Magneto also fails once every few years. Replacing with a genuine LawnBoy is now over $100, so you need to decide if an aftermarket will work for you. All in all, I'd say it's a good mower for the tinkerer in mind. If you don't mind fooling with your mower every few months to keep it running, you will be happy. If you expect to just fill it with gas, pull the starter cord and mow the lawn year after year, you will be sorely disappointed.
Pros: Seems fairly well built. When running, runs great. Excellent mulcher, and decent self propel mechanism. Bagging is fair.
Cons: Hard to keep running at peak performance. Very temperamental. Exhaust ports clog, muffler gets carbon, magneto fails, and carburetor is temperamental.
