JD4100 John Deere
My JD 4100
Model Year: 1998

I purchased the tractor new a the same time I bought a 22 acre property. It has done all my maintenance and mowing for 15 seasons and has been a real work horse. It is equipped with a 60" belly mower off the mid PTO. I also use it to run a front bucket, bush hog mower, snow blade, snow blower, chipper, plow and disk. Maintenance has been almost non-existent other than routine service. I have replaced glow plugs several times and had work done on the rear PTO once.

Pros: Great little tractor---very manuveurable.
Cons: A bit short on hp and weight for serious tasks. I now also own a Kubota L3400 with bucket and hoe for more serious earth moving projects.

Model Year: 2003

Great little tractor. Feels a little unstable with the loader and a bush hog attached, but works its little green heart out and not one problem. I am a little short on attachments now the bad guys have them all and they now have homes away from me. The loader # 410 works great and plenty of power.

Pros: Nice tractor.
Cons: For the amount of land think I should have gone just a tad larger.

This has been an excellent tractor. It has had no failures. I has been really beat up, mainly use it as a mower, but have dug hundreds of post holes, tilled gardens, etc. My Dad bought a cover, which is very nice to keep the sun off, but the kids keep running into guide wires on electric poles. Also, the front panel fell off and was destroyed by the mower deck, the dealer wants around $1000 so I just left off the front and sides. It seems to run cooler anyway. I would recommend this tractor.

Pros: Compact, easy to use, durable.
Cons: Parts are expensive.

JD4100 John Deere
First 'Big' Deere
Model Year: 1998

After finding our current house this past fall and falling in love with the setting we realized we were going to need more than a garden tractor to care for it. I've owned and loved several 300 series JD's, including a 322 (a.k.a 'The Caddy') but the only flat ground on our 2.5 acres is occupied by the house. That and a 150'+ sloped drive made my mind up. Found this one used with a 60" deck and a newer 200cx loader. Seems just a tad challenged running the deck uphill in FWD but not to where it'll cause problems. As others have said it sips fuel, seems very stable on our slopes, and the controls are well laid out.

Pros: Stable. Strong drivetrain. Good ground clearance w/o deck.
Cons: Maybe 2-4 more HP.

JD 4100
Model Year: 2000

Bought the JD 4100 in 2000 and have had absolutely no problems with the machine (Yanmar makes a good tractor). I have a front end loader, rear blade (4ft), wood chipper (3pt, rear PTO), 54" belly mower, seeder (3pt, rear PTO), all of which work well on the tractor. I have primarily used the tractor for mowing and landscaping (3.5 acres), and maintaining a gravel drive (about 150 yards). Although after the ice storm a few years ago here in Southern Missouri, the chipper was used for about 20-30 hours and worked great. The only shortcoming of the tractor is its approximately 1500 pound weight. Using the rear blade in deep snow, or especially moving soil, I have to take smaller bites than I would like. Even so, the little tractor will do almost anything a larger tractor will do, it just takes a little longer. Some folks find the inability of this tractor to take a backhoe a problem, but given the rare times I have to use a backhoe (so far never), it is cheaper to rent, so not a problem for me. Anyone who understands the limitations of a small tractor can't go wrong with this model.

Pros: Low fuel consumption, location of FEL controls, two pedal operation (one for forward another to reverse); The quick on/off FEL (less than 5 min on/off).
Cons: None, except for the limitations of a compact tractor.

Hard starter 4100
Model Year: 2001

Over all a great tractor. Acquired with the Trade of a 58 ford 8n. It came with a 410 front loader, and a King Cutter 72" finish mower, Turf tire on all four wheels, also a Woods 5'snow blade, and a 5'bush-hog, which is nearly ever used due to it's horsepower requirements. The tractor gets it normal preventive maintenance, and never gives any major problem's. I soon hope to purchase a block heater mentioned in one of the forums, This Tractor does not want to be a team player when it is 30 degrees or less. LOL

Pros: 4WD, hydraulic power assist steering, 410 front loader.
Cons: No glow plugs, Non-folding roll bar, Expensive parts for repairs.

Solid little compact tractor, utilize the FEL for landscaping around the acreage, and mow 7 acres.

Pros: Sips the fuel, built to last.
Cons: Could use a few more ponies.

JD4100 John Deere
12 year old Deere 4100 HST w/rear and mid-mount PTO, snowblower and 60" deck
Model Year: 1999

Deere puts a lot of effort into its paint scheme, but this tractor has its rust spots. Seems to me a tractor that gets salt exposure via its use as a snow blower should have better paint much like my car which is two years older. Time to apply rattle can Rustoleum. I paid $7500 for it from a private party, immediately took it to the dealer and spent $1500 having miscellaneous repairs/upgrades done to get it into runnable condition. However, I need to swap out the HST fluid (something the dealer also did one time) because it has significant water in it. I don't look forward to trying to clear all the lines and the HST of as much water as possible. My main use will be for snow blowing.

Pros: Seems sturdy.
Cons: Seems to require more parts replacement than I expected.

JD4100 John Deere
Perfect Mid-Size Tractor
Model Year: 1998

I purchased this 11 year old tractor with 351 hours with a 54" belly mower to help keep my tree farm seedlings from being overgrown by weeds. The last machine that I had was a JD 425 AWS deluxe garden tractor, but it really beat me up when I tried to mow over 10 acres/day. The 4100 does everything with ease & comfort and has had ZERO problems. My only complaint is that I wear out mower blades every 2-1/2 months. I don't understand why they stopped making this nimble tractor!

Pros: Adequate power, great comfort, nimble handling, & no problems.
Cons: None.

My first Deere CUT
Model Year: 1999

After years of using my Deere garden tractor, I made the decision to buy what seems to be the perfect tractor for my needs. I was doing some clearing and landscaping so I needed something with a front loader. Almost 6 months in to ownership, I am very pleased with this decision. This tractor is great for all of the jobs I've ask of it and cut 1/4 off my mowing time to boot. The only thing I didn't like was paying so much for a 11 year old machine.

Pros: Works like a bigger tractor.
Cons: Handles like a smaller tractor.

Review of 4100 CUT
Model Year: 2004

This is an EXCELLENT tractor. Hope JD eventually comes out with an 18ish hp version of their 2320 with its improved 3ph. More hp (than 18ish) isn't needed. This machine is awesome for moving snow and works very well for bush hogging, pulling a soil ripper, hauling mulch with FEL & carryall and driving a MacKissic chipper/shredder. The bucket on this machine is huge relative to any competition. Only troubles have been loss of a couple 3ph pins and the pin securing the forward pedal. The cover over the front pto has come off a couple of times, but I've found it and secured it again, with Goop this last time. The cover over the fuel filler cap has a chintzy spring setup that has long since broken.

Pros: More ground clearance and secure hydraulic cooler relative to 2210
Cons: No fine adjustment of the 3ph

JD4100 John Deere
This is a great tractor.
Model Year: 2000

I purchased the unit with a 6' belly mower and a front end loader. I don't use the mower any more because I use a zero-turn exMark unit now. Nothing against the JD mower, but it was too wide for my sloped lot once the several hundred trees I planted began to grow larger. The loader detaches with ease. But with the exMark, I never remove it. I've never had a problem with the tractor other than a front drive train gear. Repairs were covered under warranty. My dealer (Gladhill in Damascus) is second to none. Yes, a Deere may be more expensive to purchase and maintain than an orange or other machine. But, I believe that the total cost of ownership over many decades makes the Deere a good choice. Moreover, the ability to sleep on the eve of a major snowstorm or spring planting because I know my 4100 will start and run fine is well worth the apparent cost differential. Finally, my Deere was made in the USA. Enough said.

Pros: Ability. Reliability. Ease of maintenance. Performance. Warranty.
Cons: Apparent high cost.
