I am looking to purchase a good ZTR mower, but do not want to pay commercial price. What are some of the best ZTR's on the market that don't break the bank?

I'm not sure you've provided enough information for anyone to give you a reasonable answer. What size mower do you need, what kind of terrain (flat and level, slopes, etc.), how large an area will you be mowing, mulching, side discharge, bagging, etc.

Lots of personal opinions, just as there are with cars, pickups, and tractors. And as with those things, perhaps the dealer is as important as the brand of the machine. Personally, I have Toro and am happy with it.

At any rate, welcome to TBN.

I run 2 scags commercially . I run them hard and no major break down just the normal wear and tear.
You need to set a budget of how much you plan to spend, breaking the bank is different for everyone.
How much land are you trying to cut too is a big deal as well and the terrain. You can buy a cheap ZTR but the toys the terrain will just rattle all the bolts out.

I am no expert but you need to look at the hydro pumps and whether the mower uses two or one...
Also look at deck weight...
The guy that does my dad's yard only runs Toro's...
They are commercial and he swears by them...
My son works at the golf course and they abuse Jacobsen and Toro's...
Again, these are commercial units...
Many brands out there that uses the same pumps and parts...
Scag, Toro, Deere, Cub Cadet, ect...
It gets down to how much you want to spend and how much you are gonna mow...

The City where I live uses Kubotas and Toros, although I've seen one New Holland. And of course for the slopes on the drainage ditches, they have one Power Trac.

Local Kubota dealer that I consider quite reliable says Scag is the best gasoline model and Kubota the best diesel. But of course that's what he sells.

We picked up a 2010 60" 27 HP Swisher with 27 clock hours for $2200. The guy paid like $4800 he said. The wife selected it for him but in the end he bought a diesel kubota and was hurting for cash in Dec he said.

The Swisher has been a good deal for the $2200 for the past three years but is nothing flashy like some brands. We only mow about three acres so I expect it may be a good mower for maybe 10 years.

First of all set a dollar amount. Don't be afraid of a used commercial unit for your home use. I picked up a used GH 720K 9 yrs ago for 2700 and it may have a leaking axle, but cuts and runs fine. Will have to tear it down this winter to replace the seals and what not. It is a '95 model that had 1800 hrs on it, now there are 2200 or so. Toro commercial mowers, Walker commercial mowers both stripe nicely. Do you want mid mount or front mount? Front mount can take a snow blade or snow blower. My GH replaced my 4 wheeler that wasn't getting used.

If you want to buy new and you're not going to beat the tar out of it, look for one with HydroGear ZT2800 drives at a minimum. Atleast they're serviceable. Set the deck up so it doesn't bang around on the ground, use it reasonably and you're good to go.

If you don't mind doing some wrenching, buy a used commercial grade machine like said above.

Used ones can be purchased in the winter at reasonable prices. Many landscapers sell off equipment during this time as well. I was able to pick up a 60" Deere 757 with 600 hours for $3500 during the winter and my dad found a 72" toro with 700 hours for $2700.
