Kubota M4900SU FEL --- Ferris IS2000 27hp Kaw 61"
Ok, so Ive been in the market for my first ZT mower for my new property of around 6 acres. I want to go commercial for the simple reason of durability and speed. Most mowers I looked at ranged from 26-31 hp and were around a 60" deck. I started off at a Dixie Chopper/Hustler Dealership. Salesman told me Dixie was prolly not my best bet because they are made to go super fast and is prolly a lil more than I want. However, he showed me a Hustler X-One mower with a 31hp Kawasaki and 60" deck price was $8799. Wow, that is a well built machine! I took it out for a spin and found that it was very stiff and didnt give very much in bumpy areas. Most of my yard is pretty choppy, especially in horse areas where they have tore up the soil a bit. I did like the machine though because of just how well it was built.
Next, I went to a John Deere/Exmark Dealership. They didnt have any JD's that I could test out that fit in my requirements but they did have an exmark lazer z, E series with a 27hp kohler for $8500. I found it to be a decently built machine but am not sure about the kohler engines. I took it for a ride and found it to be quite flimsy and it also beat the **** outta my back in rough areas.
From there I went to a Ferris/Simplicity Dealer. They are noted for their patented independent suspension. The IS2000-Ferris or Simplicity Cobalt had a 61" deck and 30 hps briggs cyclonic motor and full suspension. Dealer was asking $8399. Took it out for a ride and found that the suspension really softened the ride in rough areas which I find to be a nice feature. However, I am not sure that it was as "tough" of a mower as the Hustler that I looked at first. I suppose I am not using the mower commercially, just for my own yard so I dont need something extreme but I just wasnt completely sold on the Ferris/Simplicity but realized it was probably best for my application. To make it even worse, I sat down with the salesman and they didnt want to budge at ALL on the price. Not even give me a break on a few accessories.....suspension seat, headlights, hitch. I was kinda turned off and left. Had they just given me a lil something to make me feel I was getting somewhat of a deal, I may have bought it.
After I left them, I stopped at a Gravely dealership. I looked at the 260Z which was a leftover from 2011 with a 29hp Kohler with EFI and 60" deck for $8499. Again, not too sure about the Kohler and especially the EFI???? However, the GRAVELy is one crazy, beefed up machine. Out of all of em, the Gravely was rock solid as it gets. I believe the Hustler was right up there as well. I took the Gravely out for a spin and found it to be very solid but again very rocky ride in rougher areas. Maybe I'm just used to riding mowers that are generally easier riding??? Are all ZT mowers kinda rough on the operator???
Not sure which way I"m going to go with this purchase. They are all pretty close in price with in about $500 of each other. I've been leaning more towards the Ferris because of the suspension but the Hustler and Gravely definetly stand out as better built machines in my opinion. Gotta make a decision soon as I really want to make my purchase!! Any opinions guys????

How many hour do you think you will put on the mower per year? Mowing 6 ac is estimated about 60 hours/year. Even the light built will last many years. Go with the Ferris.

I find the dealer's comment about DC interesting especially considering that Hustler has a model that tops out around 17 mph now. Regardless, just because you can go fast doesn't mean you have to.

I know kawasaki seems to be the preferred engine, but the kohler EFIs, especially 2nd generation, have a loyal following as well.

I have to admit I was not impressed with Ferris suspension. I'd heard and read plenty of both good and bad - nice idea, but not exactly a "KISS" concept (too many moving parts that can and will require replacement. Also, your dealer sounds like mine in that they wouldn't negotiate, and pretty much ignored me when I even suggested it.

I think the Gravely's a nice machine, and I really like my local dealer. Just more money than I could spend when last shopping.

Yes, all commercial ZTRs are hard on the operator, mostly due to the ability to acheive a great, manicured cut at speeds 2 or 3 times faster than consumer riders and GTs.

I'd say you're looking at the right category and brands of machines. I know suspension seats are available for almost all commercial ZTRs and something you should seriously consider. I've heard of some lawn pros buying them after market from Northern Tool or Harbor Freight. Above all, don't despair. I encourage you to take a step or two back, review, tweak your "specs", and go back at it again. I know I did this probably 4-5 times, and in the end I got a machine that, now 6 years later, I'm still thrilled to own and operate.

Well thanks for all the advice! Looks like I'm going to order my Ferris tomorrow. Just cant beat the ride quality and I'm going to be spending many hours/years on it so i need to be comfortable. I called a different dealer last week and they offered to drive an hour and a half out to my property to do a demo!! Couldnt believe it. Initial dealer wouldnt do demo and wouldnt budge on price! Glad I shopped around! New dealer let me demo on my yard for a few hours on a SUNDAY and I was quite impressed. He brought a snapper pro along to compare as a non-suspension machine. Wow, I didnt last long on that snapper before being bounced off! I'm sold on Ferris. I'm getting the is2000 with the 27 horse Kawasaki and full suspension seat. List price is $9702 discounted down to $8899 and he's throwing in a headlight kit, hitch, and extra set of blades. I think its a pretty fair deal plus I'm getting 36 months 0% interest and will deliver it to my back yard in 2 days!!!!! Cant wait!!!!!!! Lookin forward to savin a bunch of time and gas on my property! Pictures to come!

If you want more value for your money go with a Deines. Great machine, easy to maintain so they do not need a dealer network. Everything is mail order from the factory. You can find them on the web plus they have a dealer in Coldwater, Michigan if you want to try one out. He is a good guy but I never talk to him - I just call the office in Ransom, KS and they ship me the parts UPS for less than I can buy similar parts locally. Had my mower for 14 years now and all I have put on it are blades, tires, drive chains, and a couple of batteries. Just tightened the drive belt in the deck for the first time this year - I had just never thought about it and it never needed it but it was getting a little stretched and needed tightening when I checked it.
BTW, if you are mowing under trees of bushes I recommend a front deck unit. it takes up a little more storage space but sure keeps you from getting a lot of scratches.
