Zetor 5340 (John Deere 2200)
I have a problem with my Zetor 5340 (JD2200) overfilling the sump with diesel.

At first I thought it was hydraulic/gearbox oil and changed the front seal on the hydraulic pump, I used the tractor for a few hours while checking the oil regularly and the level stayed normal, the last time I checked the oil was nearly overflowing from the dipstick hole!! About 150mm higher after 1 hour operation between level checks.

Could it be possible that this much diesel is entering via a faulty/stuck injector?

In my mind there are only 3 ways diesel could be entering the engine oil...

1- leaking lift pump - I have taken the pump apart and the piston is badly worn but the pushrod is nice and tight in the guide bore, I can't see how that much diesel is getting through to the injector pump.

2- leaking delivery valve - I changed all of the delivery valve 'O' rings last year but maybe one is passing? This seems to be the most likely cause.

3- leaking injector - I have removed all of the injectors and they don't look too good so I will replace the nozzles and have them tested/adjusted, I find it hard to believe that several liters of diesel could pass the rings in an hour of operation.

I should also mention that there has been an intermittent ticking sound coming from the engine cold or hot, just comes and goes randomly.

Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated!

Check the injector pump driveshaft seal(where drive come off engine to injector pump). With an internal leak in the injector pump and a worn injector pump drive shaft seal the diesel will get into the sump in the manner you describe.
How many hours are on the clock?

There is around 3750 hours.

The injector pump is fed oil from the oil pump so I am assuming there is no seal on the front of the injector pump and oil is supposed to flow back to the sump that way? I have got the injector pump off ATM but I cannot see behind the front gear.

Another thought I'm having because I am not 100% sure that the contaminant is diesel, I changed the seal on the driveshaft for the hydraulic pump - is this seal the main pressure seal or are there seals further inside the pump which could be leaking.

The seal was replaced with an identical high pressure seal but maybe It was just a secondary seal (like a dust seal)???

My tractor is 100kms away from home, I really wish I had checked the hydraulic/transmission fluid level last time I was there!!! I was assuming that it couldn't be the hydro pump because I'd already fixed it....

I can't see any way that a glow plug could possibly cause these problems, also I have never heard of a thermostart valve, do you mean thermostat? If so how does that relate to my issues?

Pull the injectors and put them on the lines and spin at full throttle see what comes out. Otherwise water can get into the sump by the o rings at bottom of cylinder sleve.
Zetor injection pumps need to go to a zetor dealer not a local shop.

Thanks for that.

It definitely isn't water in the oil - radiator level has stayed and oil is not milky at all, hard to tell if it is diesel or hydro fluid.

I have the injectors out and I'm getting them tested tomorrow.

Another update - I have removed the injector pump plunges/delivery valves and checked the 'O' rings and they all look good.

Can anyone tell me if my tractor has a wet or dry clutch? Hoping oil isn't coming through the rear main seal.

I cant see how an injector is the problem. Is the fuel consumption high? I think it is the shaft seal on the injection pump. Does your oil smell like diesel?

Yes to me it does smell like diesel but I can't be 100% sure....

I think it is unlikely to be an injector also, for that much fuel to be getting by the rings it wouldn't run well, it was running normally.

I have an oil lubricated injector pump, there is no seal on the drive so oil can flow back to the sump.
