A walk behind (push) mower is exactly what you need unless the lawns measure into multiple acres. Easy on gas and they do nice work. You can afford to buy one with one year of revenue. Any zero turn will cost you more than your gross revenues for several years. Now if your parents are funding your business, then it is a different story.

What kind of terrain will he be working? Flat and level, slopes (how steep?), dry, wet, etc.? What about access? Will he have to go though gates? How wide are the gates, if any? Commercial rigs are expensive. Homeowner grades are cheaper and work just as well, but won't have the same warranty, if they know it's being used commercially. I suppose my little Toro SS3200 is one of the smallest and cheapest and I really like it, but it sure doesn't have much traction on wet grass or mud. I think most dealers price them a couple of hundred under the website price.

I bought my first gasoline powered mower; a walk behind with a Clinton engine, when I was 15 to do the same thing. Good luck with the plans.
