My ZD18 54" deck is quite noisy and I think it may have one or more bearings that need replacing. The unit is about 7-8 years old.

One of the bearings/spindles (?) was replaced under warranty shortly after I bought the unit new but I didn't learn exactly what they replaced.

Question #1: are these bearings replaceable or must the whole spindle be replaced?

Question #2: has anyone here had any experience with this problem? If so, could you please help me to learn how to dismantle the spindle.

Question #3: Where can I access an exploded parts diagram of these spindles and their bearings? I have no success at Kubota's site but may need some instruction about searching their site.

Thanks for your help.

It is possible to change the bearings and not the spindle as long as there is no damage.

When people come in and pick up the parts we often give them the break down diagram of the parts to assist them in the procedure.

I cant say for sure on your model. but most spindles on mowers are similar.

Take the blade off the bottom. Then there are usually 3 bolts that allow the whole hub to be pulled off the deck.

Once off, you can unbolt the large nut that holds the pully on. (you could even do this while still on the deck.

After the pully is off, it's pretty simple. Just a shaft running through a hub with a couple of bearings. Usually some kind of snaprings holding the bearings in place. And the bearings are probabally a tight fit on the shaft and in the hub. So a press would be ideal, but a hammer and a brass punch wull work. Just dont ding/damage things like the threads on the shaft.

Once you have the bearings out and cleaned up, you can get the number off them and you can buy the bearings probabally anywhere. You dealer is going to most likely be the most expensive.

The bearings/spindles replaced under warranty probably failed early because of improper engineering and assembly. Brother in-law had a mower shop rebuild his last summer and one lasted about an hour before failure. PM me and I can tell you how to avoid that premature failure.
